Lily Rabe was born in New York City in 1982 with the script already sitting on the nightstand. Her father is playwright David Rabe, and her mother was actress Jill Clayburgh. But having famous surnames in Manhattan's intellectual circles doesn't guarantee a decades-long career. She chose to study dance for ten years before deciding her place was in text-based acting.
In 2005, she made her Broadway debut in Steel Magnolias. It wasn't an easy landing, since New York critics are often merciless with the children of the cultural elite who try to inherit the spotlight. But Rabe held her ground. Her big breakthrough came in 2010 when she played Portia in The Merchant of Venice alongside Al Pacino.
That performance earned her a Tony Award nomination.
And the industry realized she wasn't a product of nepotism. Rabe has a way of owning the space that recalls the actresses of classic Hollywood. She blends an evident physical fragility with a deep voice that commands the scene. In 2011, she decided the stage wasn't enough and accepted a supporting role in an experimental horror series.
Ryan Murphy cast her in the first season of American Horror Story in 2011. On that set, she played Nora Montgomery, and her presence was so magnetic that the writers expanded her role. But the real breakout came in 2012 with the season titled Asylum. There she brought to life Sister Mary Eunice, a nun possessed by the devil, and she stole every frame she appeared in.
Television brought her the global fame that the stage had denied her.
In 2013, she played the hippie witch Misty Day in the Coven season. That character became a key part of the series' fan base. Rabe proved she could move from gothic horror to dark comedy without the character losing its seams. As a result, she became a fixture of the anthology for nearly a decade.
But being typecast is the biggest fear of any classically trained actor. In 2015, she starred in the sci-fi series The Whispers for ABC. The show didn't have the run it was hoping for and ended after just one season. That forced her to retreat back toward independent film and the stage to recalibrate her career.
In 2020, she appeared in the HBO miniseries The Undoing alongside Nicole Kidman. Her role as Sylvia Steineitz brought back her shine in big-budget productions. Rabe knows how to pick projects where the script matters more than special effects. In 2021, she starred in The Tender Bar under the direction of George Clooney for Amazon Prime Video.
She decided it was time to take creative control of her own stories.
In 2023, she made her directing debut with Downtown Owl. The film is an adaptation of Chuck Klosterman's novel, which she co-directed with her partner Hamish Linklater. The movie premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and marked her official entry into the directors' guild. That same year, she appeared in Love and Death, playing Betty Gore.
In 2024, she joined the cast of the series Presumed Innocent for Apple TV+, playing Dr. Gwen DeGiulio. Her career now moves in that league of high-end supporting actors who carry big-budget productions with just a handful of scenes. She doesn't go for the spotlight if the character has no edges worth exploring.
The production of Downtown Owl had an estimated budget of five million dollars.
