Patrick Kennedy isn't the kind of actor who chases magazine covers to validate his work. He studied English Literature at Oxford, and it shows in the way he dissects a script before stepping in front of the camera. His training at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art gave him the technical tools to fit the British gentleman mold without falling into the usual caricature.
He doesn't need to shout to draw attention.
In 2007 he worked on Atonement under the direction of Joe Wright. The role of Leon Tallis was one of those small but essential pieces that carry the dramatic weight of a major production. His real ability to sustain tension, however, was seen years later on American television.
Kennedy has the kind of face that looks like it belongs in a black-and-white photograph from the early twentieth century. That's why Steven Spielberg cast him in War Horse in 2011. In that production he played Lieutenant Waverley with a restraint that avoided the easy sentimentality of war dramas.
Many viewers rediscovered him in 2020 thanks to the phenomenon of The Queen’s Gambit. His role as Allston Wheatley was thankless and drab. Yet Kennedy made the neglect and apathy of his character feel real in a series where everything was style and color. And he did it without stealing the spotlight from the lead, while making it clear that failure has its shades too.
The British film industry keeps him on its list of go-to actors for period productions because his diction is impeccable.
In 2021 he appeared in the series Around the World in 80 Days, playing Sir Henry Gautier. He isn't chasing the lead role at all costs, preferring the security of the character actor. So he alternates between London theater and international projects without making a media fuss or taking part in unnecessary press circuits.
And the gamble paid off.
His stint on Downton Abbey as Terence Margadale was brief. Still, it confirmed that his screen presence lends an air of authenticity to any script that calls for a Home Counties accent. Kennedy understands that restraint is where the power of the modern actor lies.
During 2023 he shot scenes for television projects where punctuality and technical rigor are the norm. His approach doesn't involve extreme physical transformations or scandals on set. He simply arrives with his lines learned and a clear idea for the director of photography about how to fill the space.
In 2024 he focused on the stage play The 39 Steps in London's West End, playing Richard Hannay. It was a production that demanded considerable physical effort because of the comedy's pace and the constant shifts in tone on stage.
His contract for that specific production at the Stephen Joseph Theatre called for eight performances a week, with a base salary set according to Equity union scales for Category A productions.
