Mark Rowley did not grow up dreaming of Viking swords. In 2013, he graduated from the Royal Scottish Academy with a diploma in hand and few certainties. Paisley is a tough town for artistic dreams, but the actor knew from the start that theater was only the beginning.
His first professional steps were modest. He worked in local TV productions and lent his voice to video games such as Assassin’s Creed Syndicate in 2015. That technical work taught him the rhythm of the industry before he stood in front of a big-budget camera.
London was the next logical stop.
In 2017, he put on Finan's armor. That Irish warrior in The Last Kingdom gave him a platform few expected. It was not an easy process, because shooting in Hungary demanded exhausting physical endurance.
Rowley spent months training with stunt performers so that every swing of the axe looked real. And the gamble paid off. His chemistry with the rest of the cast made his character a pillar of the series right up until its finale.
In 2023, he returned to the role for the saga's finale in the feature film Seven Kings Must Die. The movie brought an end to six years of mud and blood in the Central European forests. Seven million viewers watched the ending in its first week of release.
But the actor wanted to get away from swords.
In 2020, he played Prince Al-Rasheed in The Spanish Princess. It was a complete change of pace (far removed from the grime of medieval Northumbria). The period production required him to work on an accent and a much stiffer physical bearing.
In 2023, he shared the screen with Idris Elba in Luther: The Fallen Sun. His role as Dobante was brief but intense. That same year, he took part in the series The North Water alongside Colin Farrell. It was an extreme shoot in the Arctic that tested his endurance against the cold and isolation.
Rowley decided to invest part of his earnings in creating his own content. In 2018, he produced the short film Lift Share after meeting the screenwriter at a film festival. He began juggling acting with financial decision-making behind the camera.
And the risk was worth it.
In 2024, he joined the cast of the series One Day to play Mr. Cope. The Netflix drama adapted David Nicholls's novel with a mature, melancholic approach. Rowley shot his scenes in London under strict planning that left no room for improvisation.
The company that manages his image rights reported net profits of two hundred thousand pounds at the close of its 2022 fiscal year.
