Alexander Doetsch was born in Germany on January 7, 1983. His childhood had no fixed roots, since his family moved across Europe and America with unusual frequency. He lived in France, Switzerland and the United States before deciding that his future was on stage or in front of a camera.
He studied in Paris for three years and then completed his training at the Drama Centre London. It was there that he understood acting demanded an almost military discipline. At that time, his mental passport was a map without clear borders, and that lack of roots made it easier for him to adopt diverse accents.
It was his first real foray into the British industry.
In 2011, he appeared in the BBC film Christopher and His Kind. He shared scenes with Matt Smith in a story that explored Berlin in the 30s. But his international profile did not take off right away after that role.
His luck changed when he accepted the role of Uhtred of Bebbanburg in 2015. The series The Last Kingdom was not looking for just a good-looking actor but for someone capable of enduring brutal shoots on the plains of Hungary. The character forced him to learn horseback riding and sword handling from scratch.
He spent eight years playing the Saxon warrior across five seasons that drew a massive global audience. Dreymon is more than just a face for historical period drama. He practices martial arts and Brazilian jiu-jitsu consistently to maintain the agility his more physical roles demand.
And physical exertion stopped being a problem.
In 2020, he decided to go beyond acting alone. He directed the second episode of season five of The Last Kingdom and discovered that technical control appealed to him as much as performing. Understanding editing rhythm helped him become a better actor in front of the lens.
Production became his new obsession.
While filming the movie Horizon Line in 2020, he had to work in a much more restrained thriller setting. The project proved he could carry a commercial feature film without relying on wooden swords and shields.
His final chapter as a warrior came to an end in 2023 with the release of Seven Kings Must Die on Netflix. The film served as the necessary epilogue to a saga that had racked up millions of viewing hours worldwide. Dreymon also served as an executive producer here, keeping a close eye on the consistency of the ending.
Alexander Dreymon divides his time between Los Angeles and Europe. He speaks three languages with complete fluency, which lets him move between international productions without being held back by an accent. But he prefers to keep his private life away from the spotlight of the gossip magazines.
The production of his latest epic film employed a crew of more than 200 people at the Korda Studios in Budapest.
