Allison Williams was born in Connecticut in 1988. She grew up watching her father report the news on NBC's evening broadcast, but she preferred to make hers up. In 2010, she posted a video online singing a version of the theme song from Mad Men, and that caught the attention of Judd Apatow.
The producer was looking for fresh faces for an HBO project. Williams fit that profile of an East Coast girl with impeccable schooling and a gaze that sometimes felt too icy to be just comedy.
And the gamble paid off.
For six seasons, she played Marnie Michaels in Girls. The character was a mix of suffocating perfectionism and obliviousness that irritated audiences. Williams weathered the storm of criticism aimed at the show with a British composure that her passport never quite earned.
Many actors get stuck in the success of their first long-running series. Williams knew her Disney princess look could be either a trap or a weapon. In 2017, she decided it would be a weapon and accepted the role of Rose Armitage in Get Out.
Jordan Peele used the actress's harmless image to build one of the most talked-about plot twists of the decade. Williams's scene eating dry cereal while sipping milk through a straw became a symbol of modern horror.
That movie cost 4.5 million dollars and grossed 255 million worldwide.
But the change wasn't a coincidence. Williams was looking for projects where her natural coolness could turn into something unsettling. In 2018, she shot The Perfection for Netflix. In this psychological horror film, she played a cello prodigy with self-destructive tendencies.
Williams realized early on that real power in the film industry lies behind the camera. In 2023, she made the leap to executive producer with M3GAN. She didn't just lend her face to play a robotics engineer with few scruples. She was also involved in developing the story.
The film became a viral phenomenon before its release thanks to a choreographed dance that flooded social media. Williams defended the movie's tone as a blend of social satire and tech-driven horror.
Not everything is big budgets.
In 2020, she starred in Horizon Line, a survival thriller set on a small plane that flew under the radar of mainstream audiences. It was a reminder that even with good instincts, the box office is treacherous terrain.
The actress has kept a low profile in her private life since she divorced Ricky Van Veen in 2019. She married again in 2022 to actor Alexander Dreymon in a private ceremony that didn't reach the press until months later.
The sequel to her robotic hit is set for release on June 27, 2025. Williams returns as a producer and the lead of the project under the Blumhouse label. The estimated budget for this second installment is double the 12 million dollars invested in the original 2023 film.
