From military barracks to cult comedy

Rhys Darby didn't always wear brightly colored costumes or ridiculous wigs. In the 1990s, he served in the New Zealand Army as a gunner in the Waiouru regiment. There he learned to march and maintain discipline, but he soon realized that his real weapon wasn't a rifle but his ability to do strange voices.

In 1996, he founded the comedy duo Rhys-A-Wig with Grant Lobban. They started out performing at local bars in Christchurch with routines based on vocal sound effects. Darby has an almost supernatural ability to imitate machines, animals and ambient noises without a microphone.

Physical comedy saved his career.

In 2007, he got the opportunity that changed the course of his career in international television. He played Murray Hewitt in the HBO series Flight of the Conchords. He was the incompetent manager of a New Zealand folk band in New York who worked at the consulate during the day.

That character was based on a real manager Darby met during his years as a stand-up comedian. And the gamble paid off. His band meetings, in which he obsessively took roll call, earned him a nomination for the Entertainment Weekly Ewwy Awards in 2009.

The leap to major studio productions

After success on cable television, he moved to Los Angeles to try his luck in mainstream movies. In 2008, he shared the screen with Jim Carrey in the film Yes Man. He played Norman, the enthusiastic and somewhat overbearing boss who throws Harry Potter-themed parties at his house.

But Hollywood is not New Zealand.

Darby had to learn to navigate an industry where his dry humor and thick accent weren't always understood right away. Still, he landed roles in big-budget productions such as The Boat That Rocked in 2009. There, he worked under Richard Curtis, playing a DJ on a pirate radio station in the 1960s.

In 2017, he broke into the world of major box office hits with Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. He played Nigel Billingsley, the non-playable guide in the video game who explains the rules to the protagonists. The film grossed more than $962 million worldwide and secured him a spot in the 2019 sequel.

His face became familiar to the general family audience. But Darby never abandoned his roots in independent comedy and kept collaborating on smaller projects with filmmaker friends such as Taika Waititi.

Pirates and the End of a Chapter in Television

In 2022, he took the lead role in the series Our Flag Means Death, produced by HBO Max. He played Stede Bonnet, an 18th-century real aristocrat who abandoned his family to become the Gentleman Pirate. The on-screen chemistry with Taika Waititi was the central axis of the narrative for two years.

That project allowed him to show a different side, where pathos blended with genuine vulnerability. Bonnet wasn't just comic relief but a man searching for his identity in a violent environment. The series built an extremely active social media fan base that fought for its renewal.

And then the executive decisions came.

In 2024, the platform decided to cancel the series after the airing of its second season. Darby closed this chapter with a total of 20 episodes recorded and a fan base that still calls for an ending to the story in other formats.

In 2025, the actor voices a lead character in the animated sequel The Bad Guys 2 from Universal Pictures. The contract for this production includes a strict confidentiality clause about the plot until the day of the theatrical release. Darby's representation office in Los Angeles confirmed that the production budget for this film exceeds $80 million.
