Synopsis of Pacific Rim: The Black

In a future where kaiju emerge from the Pacific Ocean basin, Australia has fallen under their attacks. Humanity built jaegers, giant armed robots, to stand against them, but failed to stop them, and the continent was abandoned. Only small pockets of isolated survivors remain. Taylor and Hayley Travis, two teenage siblings, are left in an improvised shelter when their parents set off in their jaeger to fight the kaiju and seek help. The kids have to make do with what little is around them and figure out how to survive on their own. The series, created by Greg Johnson and Craig Kyle, airs on Netflix and is set in the same universe as the Pacific Rim films.

Trivia about Pacific Rim: The Black

Johnson and Kyle chose 3D animation but wanted to keep a 2D aesthetic, so they turned to Polygon Pictures, which they considered a master of that approach.

Netflix announced the adaptation in November 2018, with a release expected in 2020. The title and the date of 2021 were revealed in October 2020, during its Anime Festival event.

The designs were mainly handled by Polygon Pictures, with help from the supervising director of the Western team, and both teams met in Tokyo to discuss them.

On 22 February 2022, the prequel graphic novel Pacific Rim: Blackout was released, written by Cavan Scott and illustrated by Nelson Daniel.

Rotten Tomatoes shows a 71% approval rating based on 14 reviews, with an average score of 7.10/10.

The second season was conceived from the start as the last one, according to Greg Johnson, who also explained that budget and schedule constraints created difficulties during the animation.

To animate the Sisters riding the Rippers, Polygon Pictures proposed that they wear full-body suits under their robes and be able to take them off before mounting, a solution stemming from a specific animation problem.

Greg Johnson and Craig Kyle pitched their series idea after Johnson learned that an anime of «Pacific Rim» was in development; about six months later, theirs was the only proposal still moving forward.
