Nolan North didn’t land in Los Angeles to hide away in a recording booth. In 1997, he landed the role of Chris Ramsey on General Hospital, and for six years his plan was to be a recognizable face on American television. Those were the years of never-ending soap operas and steady paychecks, but the market was about to fragment in a way nobody at his agency could have predicted.
The video game industry in the early 2000s was looking for more than grunts or flat lines. In 2007, he signed on to play Nathan Drake in Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, and it was no traditional voice job. Motion capture technology forced North to act with his whole body on an empty soundstage. He had to learn to convey charisma without costumes or real sets.
And the gamble paid off.
The success of Naughty Dog’s saga set a new standard in interactive storytelling. North brought an imperfect humanity to the protagonist that set him apart from the action heroes of the 1990s. His improvisations during the capture sessions ended up in the game’s final code because the directors understood that his naturalness was worth more than the original script.
There was a time between 2010 and 2015 when it was almost impossible to turn on a console without hearing his distinctive voice. He played Desmond Miles in Assassin’s Creed and, under a layer of distortion, became The Penguin in Batman: Arkham City. In that last project, he showed he could break from his usual register to adopt an aggressive Cockney accent that left the Rocksteady studio producers themselves baffled.
But the money was in the polygons.
In 2015, Bungie made a drastic decision for its project Destiny. They erased all the dialogue recorded by Peter Dinklage and hired North to re-record the Ghost role from scratch. It was an aggressive business move that confirmed his status as the go-to actor for major productions. If a hundred-million-dollar project had tone problems, they called Nolan.
His ability to work long motion capture sessions allowed him to move into mainstream film with cameos and supporting roles. In 2013, he appeared in Star Trek Into Darkness under the direction of J.J. Abrams. He wasn't chasing movie stardom, since his daily pay in video games already exceeded that of many supporting actors in commercial B-movies.
There was no turning back.
Over the years, he diversified his presence in the industry by creating his own content. In 2018, he launched the channel Retro Replay together with Troy Baker, and the platform helped humanize the voices behind the polygons for a massive audience. North realized that his name was a brand as powerful as the studios he worked for.
In 2023, he took part in the HBO television adaptation of The Last of Us, playing a character different from the one he voiced in the original 2013 game. It was a nod to longtime fans and highlighted his longevity in an industry that often chews up careers in less than a decade. North endures because he understands the technical timelines of production and doesn’t cause delays on set.
In 2024, he returned to the role of Cayde-6 in the expansion The Final Shape of Destiny 2, after years of the character being absent from the main storyline. The contract included recording sessions in Los Angeles that stretched over several months to cover every branch of the script. The final game's audio files exceeded 100 gigabytes in the PC version.
