Synopsis of American Vandal

Netflix premieres this mockumentary series created by Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda, which parodies true-crime documentaries. Peter Maldonado, a sophomore, decides to investigate a case that has shaken his high school: twenty-seven teachers' cars are found vandalized with obscene images. The school blames the crime on Dylan Maxwell, the class clown, played by Jimmy Tatro, and expels him. Peter, with the help of his friend Sam Ecklund, wants to find out whether Dylan was really behind the prank. Tyler Alvarez plays Peter, and the two teens' investigation serves as the thread of a story that mixes humor and mystery.

Trivia about American Vandal

Yacenda and Perrault came up with the idea for the series in early 2016 and pitched it to Netflix, which agreed to distribute it after making sure it would be more than a sketch about a prank.

The first season received the Peabody Award on April 19, 2018, in recognition of its "surprisingly insightful" take on contemporary life.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the first season holds an approval rating of 98% based on 49 reviews, with an average score of 8.3/10.

The production companies behind the series were CBS Television Studios, Funny or Die, and 3 Arts Entertainment.

The creators avoided casting celebrities just for their names and instead looked for actors who fit their roles better and could improvise.

The party scene at Nana's was shot with cellphones and a professional camera crew. The production considered it the day with the most script pages, and one extra caused a 4,000-dollar mistake at the end of fourteen hours of filming.

In 2023, Tony Yacenda said the creators already knew what a possible third season would look like and where the series would go, but there were no concrete plans to produce it.
