Björn Bengtsson was born in Malmö in 1973 and soon understood that his place was on stage. He studied at the Gothenburg Theatre Academy between 1995 and 1998. There he learned that acting is a physical, no-nonsense craft. His professional debut took place at the Malmö Stadsteater in plays that demanded a rugged presence.
But the move to the screen was not immediate. He appeared in short films and minor roles until Swedish television gave him real room to grow. In 2006, he worked on Offside and shortly after appeared in the adaptation of Wallander. These were the years when Nordic noir was booming across Europe.
He honed his craft on stage before stepping onto a film set.
In 2010, he joined the cast of Bröderna Karlsson. It was a comedy in which he played twin brothers with opposite personalities. That job gave him a level of visibility that theater could not offer. He then started taking on television projects non-stop.
In 2014, his career took a turn with Tjockare än vatten. He played Lasse, the eldest brother in a family marked by secrets in the Åland Islands. The series aired until 2020. It was a long-running job that let him explore the decline of a character who is both toxic and vulnerable.
Then the call from the BBC came. In 2017, he joined the cast of The Last Kingdom to play Sigefrid. It was his big break outside his home country. He spent months filming in Budapest under brutal weather conditions. Battle scenes were shot over fourteen-hour days and the weight of the armor was real.
The camera is drawn to his icy gaze.
Because Bengtsson isn't interested in being liked by the audience. In 2018, he took part in the version of Robin Hood directed by Otto Bathurst. It was a big-budget project that fell short at the box office, but it taught him how the big studio machinery works. He shared the set with Jamie Foxx and Taron Egerton.
In 2021, he returned to Sweden to film Den osannolika mördaren. The miniseries dealt with the assassination of Prime Minister Olof Palme. Bengtsson played Thomas Piltz. It was an exercise in restrained performance within a dense political thriller setting.
Success in Sweden doesn't guarantee anything outside Scandinavia.
In 2024, he took on the role of Borka in the new adaptation of Ronja Rövardotter. It is a classic Astrid Lindgren story in which he plays the leader of a rival gang of robbers. The production opted for a darker tone than the earlier 1980s versions. The series budget exceeded ten million euros per season.
Bengtsson lives in Stockholm and keeps a low profile in the press. He would rather talk about acting technique than his private life. In 2025, he is scheduled to begin shooting a crime drama set in northern Scandinavia with an independent production company. The contract includes an exclusivity clause covering three years of production.
