Ian Hart isn't a typical movie star.

In 1991, he played John Lennon in The Hours and Times, and that shadow followed him for decades. But he did it so well that he reprised the role in Backbeat three years later. Hart has the electric gaze of men who grew up in Liverpool's working-class neighborhoods.

Liverpool shaped his character.

Ken Loach's mud and politics

In 1995, he worked with Ken Loach on Land and Freedom. It was a grueling shoot in the Aragonese Maestrazgo, where Hart played a militiaman from the POUM. That experience shaped his view of acting as a physical craft. He was paid the minimum wage set by the union so there would be no pay gap between actors and extras.

For him, acting was never a matter of ego. In 1998, he appeared in Enemy of the State alongside Will Smith. Still, Hart always returned to small British productions. So he specialized in supporting roles that steal every scene without the viewer quite knowing why.

Quirrell's turban and financial security

The general public recognizes him for the turban he wears on the back of his head. In 2001, he accepted the role of Professor Quirrell in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. It was his breakthrough into mainstream film. But Hart never felt at ease on the red carpets of Los Angeles. He prefers the anonymity of a pub in London.

Blockbuster money buys freedom.

In 2004, he played Arthur Conan Doyle in Finding Neverland. He worked alongside Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet. But what really interested him was the historical accuracy of the script. Hart is a voracious reader who often rewrites his own dialogue when he spots anachronisms.

Maturing on the Small Screen

In 2015, he joined the cast of The Last Kingdom as Father Beocca. He stayed with the series until 2020. His character brought a dry humanity that contrasted with the brutality of the Vikings. Hart prefers roles where dialogue carries more weight than action. His exit from the series was a creative decision agreed upon with the producers to give more weight to the protagonist's storyline.

In 2021, he worked on Help alongside Jodie Comer and Stephen Graham. It was a raw drama about care homes during the pandemic. Hart played Steve with a restraint that earned him praise from British critics. But he kept his usual low profile.

In 2024, he appeared in the series Mr Bates vs The Post Office, playing Bob Rutherford. He also filmed the thriller Nightsleeper that same year. The series had a technical budget of £15 million to recreate the interior of a moving train using high-resolution LED screens.
