Stefanie Martini didn't need decades of waiting to realize her face fit the period drama. Born in Bristol in 1990, her time at the prestigious RADA polished a physical presence that seems rescued from the 1940s.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2016, she made her television debut in the series Doctor Thorne under the direction of Julian Fellowes. She played Mary Thorne. It was a classic period role in which her gaze managed to steal the frame from the more seasoned members of the cast.
The British industry handed her a poisoned gift in 2017. She was offered the role of a young Jane Tennison in Prime Suspect 1973. The real problem was that audiences still had Helen Mirren's face imprinted on that same character.
And critics were watching her closely from the very first minute.
But Martini chose to ignore the earlier legacy and build something of her own. Her version of the detective was more fragile and less cynical. She managed to make the audience forget the comparisons over six episodes of suffocating pacing.
Six million viewers tuned in for the premiere in the United Kingdom. It was her ultimate test before moving on to larger international projects.
In 2017, she took part in Emerald City, a dark reinterpretation of Oz that never quite caught on with global audiences. She played Lady Ev. It was a project shot on European locations that barely lasted a single season on air.
She starred in Crooked House in 2017 alongside Glenn Close. Playing Sophia Leonides allowed her to move within a world of luxury and poison (based on the work of Agatha Christie) that reinforced her image in traditional mystery cinema.
In 2020, she joined the cast of The Last Kingdom for its fourth season. Her role as Eadith gave her massive visibility thanks to global streaming distribution. Because Martini knows that on-demand television is the new engine of the industry.
Filming in Hungary was exhausting.
In 2022, she shot Lola, an experimental science fiction film filmed in 16mm and 35mm. The movie uses the aesthetic of a faux war documentary. Martini plays Martha, a woman who builds a machine capable of picking up radio signals from the future.
By 2023, she had returned to British television with The Gold. In 2024, she joined the cast of the series Boarders. Her role in the new adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo in 2024 set her fee at high-budget production rates.
The production of this latest international series had a budget of more than forty million euros.
