Cambridge, 1963. Stephen Hawking is a British astrophysics graduate student who still has no thesis topic, much to the concern of his friends and professors. Alongside his tutor, he attends a lecture by Roger Penrose on black holes. At a university party, he meets Jane Wilde, a literature student, and a conversation between them soon turns into something more. Stephen still isn't sure which path to take in physics, and the couple begins building a relationship shaped by class differences, doubts and other people's expectations. Directed by James Marsh, the film stars Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones.

Trivia about The Theory of Everything

During editing, the filmmakers tried to recreate Hawking's synthesized voice, but the result was not what they wanted. Hawking gave them permission to use his own synthesized voice, the one heard in the final film.
The film claims that Stephen's voice comes from an answering machine, but it actually belongs to Dr. Dennis H. Klatt.
Felicity Jones incorporated into the performance the gestures and speech patterns of Jane Hawking, something she confirmed after seeing the finished film.
Redmayne spent six months researching Hawking's life and studied his accent and speech patterns with dialect coach Julia Wilson-Dickson.
