Charlotte Hope studied French and Spanish Philology at the University of Oxford when she decided her future was not in academia. University theater was a refuge for her, but the British industry demands more concrete steps. She debuted in 2010 with a tiny role in the series Casualty and spent some time taking supporting roles in productions we hardly remember.
But everything changed when the casting call came for an HBO fantasy series that was already a global phenomenon. She joined Game of Thrones in 2013 to play Myranda. What was going to be a single-episode appearance turned into a three-season run thanks to her ability to embody absolute cruelty.
And the gamble paid off.
Her character did not exist in George R.R. Martin's novels. The writers created Myranda specifically for her because they needed someone who could hold their own against a sadist like Ramsay Bolton. On that shoot, she learned that physical restraint communicates far more than screaming or overacting. It was her real acting school before she moved on to projects with greater dramatic weight.
In 2019, Starz handed her the keys to a big-budget production. Hope took on the role of Catherine of Aragon in The Spanish Princess and had to deal with the pressure of leading an international cast. For the role, she drew on her university studies and worked on an accent that blended her native English with the rhythm of Castilian Spanish.
Filming this series meant long days carrying costumes weighing several kilos in historic locations. But the actress preferred to focus on the psychology of a woman who refused to be a decorative piece at the court of Henry VIII. During the two seasons aired between 2019 and 2020, her face became a familiar sight on billboards around the world.
It wasn't a straight path to massive success.
She alternated television work with theater projects in London to regain direct contact with audiences. In 2016, she took part in the play Buried Child, and in 2018 she joined the cast of Good for Otto. These experiences helped her move away from the period-drama image that British cinema often imposes on its young talents.
In 2024, she took a new direction in her career with the release of Catch Me a Killer. In this series, she plays Micki Pistorius, the first serial killer profiler in South Africa in the 1990s. The shoot was emotionally demanding because the plot was based on real cases of extreme violence. She had to dig deep into criminal psychology to steer clear of the genre's clichés.
The production was filmed entirely in South Africa and required a notable physical transformation. Hope appears on screen with a restraint far removed from the luxury of her earlier royal roles. It's a dry, direct part in which silence weighs more than dialogue in every interrogation scene.
By 2025, she is scheduled for the release of Hate Song, a project that puts her back in a setting of psychological tension. The actress continues to choose scripts that avoid the obvious and prefers characters who navigate constant moral ambiguity. Her contract for this film included specific clauses about the shooting schedule on location in Europe.
The British industry keeps her on its list of reliable names for mid-budget productions. In 2024, her television episode fee reached figures that place her among the top actresses of her generation. The shoot of her latest film wrapped three days ahead of schedule due to a budget adjustment during post-production.
