Some actors seem destined for instant stardom, while others need a decade of invisible supporting roles before the industry takes them seriously. Charlie Cox belongs to the second group. In 2007 he starred in Stardust alongside Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer. It seemed like the start of a meteoric career in the Hollywood Hills. But the film industry has its own rules, and massive success did not arrive overnight.
Cox spent years alternating independent productions with stage plays in London. In 2011 he joined the cast of Boardwalk Empire to play Owen Sleater. His character met a violent end inside a wooden box. It was an abrupt exit that forced him to look for new opportunities in a market crowded with British faces.
And the phone stopped ringing for months.
In 2014, Cox received the script for a television series for a streaming platform that was then beginning to dominate home viewing. The role demanded a physical preparation that bordered on obsessive. Cox worked with mobility consultants to learn not to focus his gaze during action scenes. The technical blindness was his greatest acting challenge to date.
Daredevil premiered in 2015 and changed how superhero stories were seen on television. The tone was dark, and the violence felt real. Cox filmed fight scenes lasting several minutes with no visible camera cuts. But in 2018 the series was unexpectedly canceled over rights disputes between major corporations.
The actor returned to the stage and to smaller productions such as the series Kin in 2021.
In 2021 Cox made a brief appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home. That scene, barely a minute long, sparked a massive reaction in cinemas around the world. Disney then decided to bring the character back for its own catalog. In 2022 development of Daredevil: Born Again was announced, a project that went through a deep creative overhaul during 2023.
The gamble paid off.
Filming for the new season resumed in 2024, with a tone closer to the original legal drama. The production confirmed 18 episodes for its first phase on the platform. Charlie Cox returned to wear the Matt Murdock suit on the streets of New York under a contract that secures his presence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for years to come. The estimated budget for the initial production phase exceeded $ 150 million.
