Rob Stewart was born in Toronto in the summer of 1961 with a firm dream of becoming a professional ice hockey player. A serious injury cut that path short before he turned twenty and forced him to make a living on local stages. He studied Latin and English at the University of Waterloo to try to make sense of his future.
In 1991, he accepted the role of Nick Slaughter in Tropical Heat. The series was shot between Mexico and Israel on a tight budget, with scripts that weren't chasing critical prestige. No one on the crew believed that detective with the ponytail and flowered shirts would make it past the first season.
And the gamble paid off.
The show ran for three years on air and was sold to dozens of countries. Stewart found himself with a strange kind of fame that varied from territory to territory. While in Canada he was just one more supporting actor, in Serbia he became a symbol of peaceful resistance against the political regime of the time.
In 2009, he traveled to Belgrade to shoot the documentary Slaughter Nick for President. He discovered that he was more famous there than any Hollywood star, because his character represented freedom for a generation punished by war. That trip changed his view of television's real influence on popular culture.
But life after the ponytail was not easy.
For years he jumped from one production to another without finding a role that could erase the label of the beach detective. In 2010, he appeared in the series Nikita playing Roan. It was a necessary change of register toward darker, more restrained characters, and it helped him move away from pure action comedy.
He worked on Killjoys from 2015 to 2019, bringing Khlyen to life. Sci-fi fans appreciated his ability to keep the mystery alive without saying a word too many. Stewart usually prefers shoots where the script is locked months before production begins so he can work on the subtext.
In 2021, he joined the cast of Mayor of Kingstown alongside Jeremy Renner. He plays Captain Richard Heard in a storyline that explores systemic corruption in Michigan's prison system. Filming the third season in 2024 required fourteen-hour days in the bitter cold of Pittsburgh.
The production used Arri Alexa cameras with Panavision lenses to achieve that gray, gritty look that defines the show's style. The contracts for supporting actors on digital platforms like this one include exclusivity clauses that limit their appearances in other media during the broadcast period.
