Hannah Emily Anderson didn't come to Toronto to sightsee. She trained at the George Brown Theatre School, where she learned that restraint is often more effective than screaming. That classical education let her break into Canadian television without the bad habits of actors who only chase the camera.
She's from Winnipeg.
Her first steps in series like The L.A. Complex and Saving Hope were low-key but taught her the pace of professional shoots. During those years of learning, Anderson refined a dry style that would fit perfectly with the genre films that were still to come.
In 2017, her luck turned with Jigsaw. Playing Eleanor Bonneville gave her the visibility she needed in an industry that often devours its horror leads. But her real breakthrough was What Keeps You Alive in 2018.
In this suspense film, she did more than act. She helped build a chilling, terrifying character who broke away from the usual tropes of killer movies. Critics noticed her because she managed to carry an entire film with only two actresses on screen and a script that demanded grueling physical commitment.
And the gamble paid off.
The American industry came calling, and Anderson took on the challenge of big-budget television. In 2018, she joined the cast of The Purge to bring Jenna Betancourt to life, a role that required almost constant night shoots.
That series demanded constant exhaustion.
Shortly after, she appeared in X-Men: Dark Phoenix as Elaine Grey in 2019. It was a small role in a massive-scale production that gave her a close look at how top-tier visual effects work. After that experience, she decided acting wasn't enough and began exploring directing and writing.
In 2020, she wrote and directed the short film Come Back. The piece explores grief from a deeply personal angle, far removed from the tricks of mainstream cinema. But horror soon called her back once again.
Her return to large-scale psychological horror took shape with the filming of Return to Silent Hill, which began in 2023. In this project directed by Christophe Gans, she faces a suffocating atmosphere again, playing Mary, a character central to the canon of the original video game franchise.
Filming took place mainly in locations in Germany and Eastern Europe to capture the decaying industrial aesthetic the story requires. Anderson worked alongside Jeremy Irvine on a production that aimed to recapture the visual essence of the 2006 film.
The film had an estimated production budget of $42 million.
