Kimberly-Sue Murray was born in Gaspé, a town in Quebec where winter imposes a natural isolation. She studied acting at Dawson College in Montreal, and that academic foundation was her first real contact with the rigors of the craft. Before turning twenty, she already understood that Canada's industry gives nothing to those who wait on the sidelines.
In 2010, she decided to move to Toronto to compete in the English-language market. It was not an impulsive move but a necessary logistical maneuver. There she began landing brief appearances in television productions while refining a dry, direct acting style. From the start she avoided the mannerisms of classical theater, focusing instead on a naturalness better suited to the camera.
The Canadian industry does not usually hand out second chances.
During 2012, she appeared in The Colony, a science fiction feature where she shared the set with Laurence Fishburne. It was a physically demanding shoot that let her observe up close how mid-level budgets are managed in North America. But her real education came through persistence on the audition circuit in Ontario.
In 2019, her career saw a notable acceleration thanks to cable television and streaming. She played the Seelie Queen in the series Shadowhunters, and that role gave her immediate international visibility among young audiences. The character required a mix of coldness and authority that Murray pulled off without falling into the usual excesses of the fantasy genre.
That same year, Netflix premiered V-Wars, a production about biological vampirism in which she played Danika Dubov. The shoot was intense, and the series drew a considerable global audience during its first months. The series was canceled after just one season due to production costs and changes in the platform's strategy.
And the bet paid off despite the project's premature end.
Murray didn't let the cancellation derail her professional momentum. In 2020, she enrolled at the Canadian Film Centre to sharpen her skills in content creation and production. She quickly understood that relying solely on casting directors' decisions was a long-term strategic mistake. So she founded her own production company, Labyrinthe, to develop her own scripts.
In 2021, she starred in Trader, a psychological thriller that rests almost entirely on her shoulders. The film was shot in confined spaces and demanded a level of dramatic concentration that Murray had not explored in her earlier work. Creative control became her absolute priority during this stage of her career.
During 2022 and 2023, she took part in the series The Lake, where she explored a much lighter, comedic side. It was a necessary change of pace to avoid being typecast as a femme fatale or action character. But the project that most recently cemented her presence in the international market was The Serial Killer's Wife in 2023.
This British production allowed her to work in a narrative environment different from the North American one. Filming was carried out with a European sensibility that prioritized psychological suspense over visual impact. The series reached the top viewing charts in several European countries during the last quarter of that year.
Acting is an art of endurance.
In 2024, the actress centered her activities in Toronto to coordinate the post-production of two short films that she wrote and directed herself. This shift toward directing is part of a personal business plan to reduce her dependence on outside studios. That May, the Canadian actors' union registered her new contracts under independent production rules.
