It takes a pair to beat the prognosis

Adam Lerner is a 27-year-old journalist who works for a public radio station in Seattle. He leads a quiet life with Rachael, his artist girlfriend, although his best friend, Kyle, doesn't approve of the relationship. One day, severe back pain sends him to the doctor. Tests reveal a cancerous tumor in his spine, and treatment includes chemotherapy. Adam tries to keep up with his routine and his partner, but the news forces him to face an illness he never expected. The film follows him from that initial moment on, as his circle reacts to the news in very different ways.

Trivia about 50/50

James McAvoy was set to play the lead role, but left the project for personal reasons: he didn't want to miss the birth of his first child. Joseph Gordon-Levitt took over the part.
Will Reiser's screenplay was originally titled "I'm with Cancer," but the executives at Summit Entertainment changed the title so as not to scare off audiences with the subject. It then went through "Live with It" before becoming "50/50."
At the New York premiere, Joseph Gordon-Levitt explained that there was only one take of the head-shaving scene, the same one that appears on the posters and in the ads, because you can't shave your head twice.
Principal photography took place from February 22 to March 31, 2010, with locations in Richmond, Vancouver, other areas of British Columbia and Seattle.

Quotes by 50/50

  • [to Adam] You’ll be fine. 50/50! If you were a casino game you’d have the best odds!
  • [to Adam, the night before Adam's surgery] Driving! That’s what you want to do? That’s your “Make A Wish”? To drive? We could be having sex with hookers while skydiving, and instead you want to do something I learned to do when I was fifteen!
