Evan Goldberg began writing the script for Superbad at age thirteen because he had nothing better to do in Vancouver. He wasn't looking to reinvent the teen comedy. He just wanted his friend Seth Rogen and him to write dialogue that didn't sound like stale studio fare.
That obsession with raw honesty led to his first serious job in 2004. He joined Da Ali G Show as a writer. It was the real training ground where Goldberg learned to push the limits of bad taste without losing comedic rhythm.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2007, Superbad grossed 170 million dollars worldwide. Goldberg wasn't just signing on as a writer. He was laying the groundwork for a production company, Point Grey Pictures, that put personal chemistry ahead of market formulas. But his career didn't stop at jokes about losing one's virginity.
In 2013, Goldberg decided that writing alone was no longer enough. He stepped behind the camera alongside Rogen to direct This Is the End. They put half a dozen Hollywood stars in a house and forced them to play hateful versions of themselves while the world came to an end.
The film cost 32 million dollars and quadrupled that figure at the box office. Goldberg proved he could handle big egos under an absolute chaos premise. But the real buzz came a year later.
Chaos was the message.
In 2014, he directed The Interview. The satire about a plot to assassinate North Korea's leader triggered a massive cyberattack against Sony Pictures. Goldberg watched his movie become a national security issue. The theatrical release was canceled across much of the United States, and the film ended up finding its audience on digital platforms.
After that incident, Goldberg decided to diversify his project portfolio. In 2016, he produced Sausage Party. It was the first computer-animated adult-rated movie to achieve massive success in commercial theaters.
In 2019, Goldberg found in television the perfect space for his style of violence and dark humor. He premiered The Boys on Amazon Prime Video. The series shattered the clean image of superheroes and became the most-watched product on the platform.
Goldberg understood that audiences were tired of glossy visuals. So he bet on corrupt characters and scenes of a rawness rarely seen in big-budget fiction. In 2021, he repeated the formula with Invincible and once again dominated the conversation in adult animation.
In 2023, Goldberg produced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. The movie went for a gritty, handcrafted visual style that set it apart from the digital polish of other franchises. It grossed 180 million dollars worldwide.
In 2024, he oversaw the launch of the series Sausage Party: Foodtopia to expand the universe of his 2016 movie. Production on season four of The Boys that same year carried an estimated budget of 11 million dollars per episode.
