Marci T. House was born in Chicago and trained under the discipline of the South Side. She studied architecture at the University of Illinois, and that technical background shapes how she understands acting. In 1995 she graduated with a degree she still keeps. For her, a character is a building that needs solid foundations before the walls go up.
And the gamble paid off.
At the Piven Theatre Workshop, she learned that the stage has no patience for lack of preparation. Her time on Chicago's stages gave her a composure she would later bring to the screen. In the nineties, she decided to move to Vancouver. She was looking for an environment where her profile could fit into the growing Canadian film and TV production industry.
In 2014, she took part in Godzilla with a brief but effective appearance. She wasn't after the spotlight, because she prefers the effectiveness of the supporting actor who holds the tension of a scene together. So she began taking on one TV project after another, where authority was her defining trait. Between 2015 and 2020, she played Captain Halloway in The Magicians.
In this Syfy series, she showed that science fiction can be done with absolute restraint.
In 2018, she shot The Bletchley Circle: San Francisco, playing Iris Beane. That role brought her her biggest international recognition up to that point. But House has always kept her feet on the ground. She knows that an actor's career depends on consistency, not lucky breaks.
In 2021, she joined the cast of Big Sky as Janine. It was a period of heavy workload, as she also shot the series Day of the Dead, playing Captain Rhodes. Critics praised her ability to command the set without having to raise her voice. In 2022, she took part in Devil in Ohio, bringing the necessary gravity to a psychological thriller plot.
In 2023, she worked under Mike Flanagan on The Fall of the House of Usher.
She played Judge Johnnie Mae in a Netflix production that demanded an almost theatrical pace of dialogue. In 2024, she appeared in the series Wild Cards, maintaining a production pace that knows no downtime. House doesn't just wait for casting offers. In 2022, she launched her own production company to develop scripts that avoid the racial stereotypes common in the North American market.
At the end of 2024, she plans to begin pre-production on a feature-length documentary about the Black diaspora in Canadian theater. The estimated budget for the project is around $1.5 million.
