Brandon Flynn landed on the set of 13 Reasons Why at just 23 years old, with formal theater training that had little to do with the artificial glitz of teen dramas. He was born in Miami in 1993. His education at the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University gave him a solid technical foundation that he applied right away to the character of Justin Foley.
And the industry took notice.
What was initially meant to be a brief appearance of a few episodes evolved along the way. The original script did not plan for the actor to carry the emotional weight of the storyline for four full seasons between 2017 and 2020. But Flynn turned the vulnerability of an antagonist into the main driving force of the Netflix series.
He was the unexpected survivor of the platform.
In 2017, his private life made headlines after a social media post in which he criticized a hate message in Australia. Flynn never hid his sexual identity, but he always tried to keep his activism from overshadowing his professional profile in the offices of Los Angeles. So he sought out projects that broke with his image as the tormented high school boy.
In 2020, he accepted the role of Henry Osgood in the series Ratched. There he worked under Ryan Murphy and shared scenes with Sarah Paulson in a much darker tone. That shoot allowed him to explore psychological horror and fully move away from the tabloid labels of the time.
Theater remains his quiet refuge.
Pure horror entered his career in 2022 with the return of the Hellraiser franchise. He played Matt in a production shot mostly in Serbia. It was an exhausting physical job, where the cold of the Balkans and long makeup sessions replaced California sunshine. This career decision aimed to prove his ability to lead cult titles without relying on his existing fan base.
But his most dramatic change of pace came in 2024 with the Apple TV+ production Manhunt. In this historical drama, he played Edwin Stanton Jr. with a restrained performance that surprised critics who only remembered him for his teen roles. The series demanded precise language and a stage presence that Flynn delivered with the poise he had developed during his college years.
His income from image rights and advertising contracts grew exponentially after he surpassed five million followers on his public profiles. On the set of The Parenting, he worked alongside stars of the caliber of Brian Cox and Edie Falco. The production of this horror comedy wrapped post-production with an estimated budget of 25 million dollars.
