Lismore is a small town in New South Wales, and that's where it all began for Maia Mitchell. In 2006 she landed her first major role on the series Mortified, playing Brittany Flune. She was only twelve years old, yet she already had a natural feel for comedic timing that was unusual for her age.
That Australian project performed well in international markets and opened the doors to Disney Channel. In 2013, the network chose her to star in Teen Beach Movie alongside Ross Lynch. The film was a massive ratings hit, with 8.4 million viewers on its U.S. premiere night.
And the change worked.
Mitchell didn't limit herself to singing and dancing on artificial beaches, because she was looking for something deeper. That same year she joined the cast of The Fosters, a Jennifer Lopez production that tackled complex social issues. She played Callie Jacob for five seasons and became the face of the struggles within the American foster care system.
The show was so successful that it spawned a spin-off titled Good Trouble in 2019. Mitchell moved to Los Angeles to keep playing the same character, now in an adult, professional setting. It was a nearly decade-long commitment to a single fictional identity.
In 2022, she decided it was time to stop. The actress left the series midway through the fourth season to return to Australia and be close to her family. It was a personal decision that surprised fans of the show, but she justified it by the mental toll of living far from home during the pandemic.
It wasn't all smooth sailing.
But independent film came calling too. In 2019 she starred in The Last Summer for a streaming platform, and in 2022 she joined the thriller No Way Out. In the latter, she played Tessa in a survival story that was a total departure from the teen image she had built in previous years.
Her return to major productions came in 2023 with The Artful Dodger. In this series filmed in Australia, she plays Lady Belle Fox, a woman who defies the social norms of the 19th century to become a surgeon. The production used real historic locations in New South Wales to lend authenticity to the story.
The industry doesn't always wait.
In 2024, Mitchell returned to her interest in producing and acting in smaller-scale projects. In 2025, her role in the film Family Family was confirmed, sharing the cast with figures such as Mark Ruffalo. It's a drama that explores toxic family dynamics, directed by Ben Falcone.
Mitchell filmed her final scenes in Los Angeles before returning to Sydney to manage her schedule for 2026. The series Good Trouble officially ended after five seasons and a total of 88 episodes filmed.
