Ross Lynch was born in Littleton, Colorado, in 1995. His family moved to Los Angeles in 2007 so that his older brother could pursue a career in entertainment. But it was Ross who ended up carrying the weight of massive fame just four years later.
In 2011, he signed on to star in Austin & Ally. The series ran for 87 episodes and kept him under a contract that controlled his image, his music and his schedule. Disney Channel was then a star-making machine, and Lynch fit the mold without apparent effort.
And the gamble paid off.
During that time, he juggled TV sets with the band R5. The group was made up of his brothers and a close friend, which helped him stay grounded in family life while the others performed on stages across half the world. They sold thousands of copies of their records, but the industry still saw them as a teen consumer product.
The change of direction came with My Friend Dahmer in 2017. Lynch took on the role of a teenage serial killer before committing his first crime. It was a risky decision because it meant breaking away from the beach-heartthrob image he had built in Teen Beach Movie in 2013.
Nobody expected that boy with the perfect smile to look at anyone like that.
Critics at the Los Angeles Film Festival were struck by his restrained, dark performance. There were no big gestures or screaming, just an empty stare that made viewers uneasy. In 2018, he joined the cast of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina for Netflix, where he played Harvey Kinkle for four seasons.
That series let him explore more commercial horror. But Lynch was already thinking about music differently. In 2018, he disbanded R5 to form The Driver Era with his brother Rocky. They wanted full control over production and a sound that didn't have to pass through the filters of a major record label.
The music project became his absolute priority. In 2019, they released their first album, X, and began touring small venues to rebuild their identity. Lynch stopped compulsively accepting scripts to focus on writing songs about growing up, without censorship.
The transition was not easy, because the Disney kid label is hard to shake in Hollywood. Even so, he managed to keep a low profile in the tabloid press. He would rather people talk about his live shows or his ability to play several instruments than about his private life.
The change was real.
By 2024, Lynch decided to space out his on-screen appearances even further. Filming for his role in the romantic comedy Relationship Goals was scheduled to fit between studio recording blocks. His fee per concert now exceeds the income he earned during his best years on television.
The distribution deal for his latest independent release closed for a six-figure sum in May 2025.
