Helen Hunt earned a million dollars per episode for the final season of Mad About You. This was in 1999. That figure placed her at the top of the American television industry, alongside the stars of Friends. But her road to that seven-figure paycheck was no bed of roses or a lucky break from a summer night.
In 1973, she was already in front of a camera in the TV movie Pioneer Woman. She was ten years old, with a father who knew every lever of the business from the inside. Gordon Hunt was not only her parent. He was her mentor, and the man who taught her that acting is a technical craft that demands precision over mystique.
And then the chemistry with Paul Reiser kicked in.
Television was her training ground for two full decades. She appeared in projects such as The Mary Tyler Moore Show and The Bionic Woman without making much media noise. In 1992, she premiered the series that would give her full control over her career. Mad About You ran for seven initial seasons and earned her four consecutive Emmy Awards for Best Actress in a Comedy.
That was a statistical anomaly in the nineties. Hunt played Jamie Buchman with a naturalness that avoided the usual theatrics of sitcoms of the era. But success on the small screen was not enough for her. She wanted to prove her face could fill movie theaters without the help of a laugh track.
In 1996, she accepted the lead role in Twister. The film grossed nearly $500 million worldwide. Hunt survived a physically grueling shoot where the engines of Boeing 707 aircraft caused her temporary ear damage and eye burns from the high-intensity lights.
The risk was total.
In 1997, she starred in As Good as It Gets alongside Jack Nicholson. James L. Brooks's direction drew out a restrained performance that few expected from a television star. The result was the Oscar for Best Actress in 1998. That night she also took home the Golden Globe and the Screen Actors Guild Award.
Winning the Oscar didn't stop her.
She kept landing big-budget projects such as Cast Away in 2000 alongside Tom Hanks. Around that same time, she shot What Women Want with Mel Gibson. Both films did wonderfully at the box office. But Hunt began to feel that the role of the female companion in major studio productions was too small for her.
So she decided to move into directing. In 2007, she premiered Then She Found Me after years of searching for independent financing. She wrote the screenplay, directed it and starred in it. It was her way of saying she didn't plan to wait for the phone to ring with mediocre offers.
In 2012, she once again received critical acclaim for The Sessions. Her performance as a sex therapist earned her another Oscar nomination. It was a bold bet on physical and emotional nudity at a stage in her career when Hollywood often turns its back on actresses over forty.
But she found her real stability behind the television cameras. She has directed episodes for series such as This Is Us, Life in Pieces and Feud. In 2019, she returned to her role as Jamie Buchman for a limited revival of Mad About You that directly appealed to the nostalgia of its original audience.
In 2024, she guest-starred on the series Hacks, playing a high-level executive. Hunt keeps a low profile in Malibu and picks her projects with surgical precision. The syndication deal for her flagship series keeps generating millions in residual income every year for her bank account.
