Mädchen Amick

The Double R Diner and the Lynch Phenomenon

Mädchen Amick arrived in Los Angeles at age 16 with little more than a name that means girl in German. In 1987, she left high school in Nevada to make her own way through auditions and dance classes. David Lynch spotted her three years later and decided that no one else could play Shelly Johnson.

Twin Peaks premiered in 1990. She played an abused waitress who hid secrets under a sky-blue uniform. That shoot in the state of Washington put her on the radar of teenagers around the world, but the industry is fickle.

But the industry is fickle.

In 1992, she starred in Sleepwalkers, a horror film written by Stephen King. The movie grossed 30 million dollars in the United States on a modest budget. It was her first real foray into box office success before Lynch's television phenomenon fully faded.

The Desert Crossing of the Major Studios

After the original series ended, projects followed that didn't always take off. In 1995, she headlined the cast of Central Park West, a big bet by CBS to compete with the teen dramas of the era. Critics were brutal and audiences didn't follow at all.

And then the phone stopped ringing as often.

Amick never stopped working, but she found a home in long-running supporting roles. In 2002, she appeared in Gilmore Girls as Sherry Tinsdale, and shortly after she put on a white coat in ER. She appeared in ten episodes of the medical drama between 2004 and 2005.

These roles kept her busy while she raised her two children away from the spotlight. In 1992 she married David Alexis, and since then they have maintained one of the most stable relationships in an industry known for quick divorces and tabloid scandals.

Taking Control Behind the Camera in Her Maturity

In 2017, she accepted the role of Alice Cooper in Riverdale. The CW series gave her massive visibility among a generation that wasn't even born when her first big hit aired. She played Betty Cooper's mother for seven full seasons.

There she also explored directing.

In 2020, she directed her first episode of the series, titled Chapter Seventy-Six: Killing Mr. Honey. She repeated the experience behind the camera in 2021 and 2022. These years proved that her interest in craft went far beyond standing in front of the lens.

Her return to the Lynch universe happened in 2017 with Twin Peaks: The Return. She put on Shelly Johnson's apron again for 18 episodes that puzzled international critics. Filming of the final season of Riverdale wrapped in August 2023 after a total of 137 episodes were shot.
