Dana Ashbrook wasn't looking to be the center of attention when he started making the rounds of Los Angeles casting calls in the late eighties. He had that mix of swagger and vulnerability that casting directors of the era loved. By 1988 he had already popped up in genre films such as Return of the Living Dead Part II and Waxwork, but his luck was about to turn thanks to a coffee with David Lynch.
That audition for the pilot of Twin Peaks in 1989 shaped the rest of his professional career.
Bobby Briggs was a character loaded with testosterone and domestic troubles, which Ashbrook handled without slipping into parody. The show's success was so sudden that the actor suddenly found himself on the casting lists of half the world. But early-1990s TV fame was a double-edged sword, because producers only saw him as the rebellious boyfriend of the murdered girl.
When the series ended abruptly in 1991, the phone rang less often. Ashbrook appeared in the film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me in 1992 to close out the cycle, but mainstream movies never quite found a place for him. He didn't mind much stepping down into the mud of independent film and occasional TV guest spots to keep paying the bills.
And the grind never let up.
Between 2002 and 2003, he appeared in nine episodes of Dawson’s Creek as Rich Rinaldi. It was a period of pure acting survival, during which he landed roles in series such as Charmed and The Kill Point. His look had changed, and the eighties mullet gave way to a maturity that suited him far better on camera.
In 2009, he landed a recurring role on the series Crash opposite Dennis Hopper. It was an opportunity to show that he could carry complex storylines outside Lynch's dreamlike universe. But fate always ends up returning to the same place, no matter how hard one tries to run in the opposite direction.
The call to reprise the role of Bobby Briggs in Twin Peaks: The Return came almost three decades after the original premiere. This time, the character was no longer a troubled teenager but a police officer who cried upon seeing Laura Palmer's photo. This evolution was one of the most applauded aspects of the 2017 season, thanks to its restrained yet direct emotional weight.
Ashbrook understood perfectly well that time waits for no one.
After that media revival, the actor kept a steady pace in low-budget productions. In 2022 he starred in the series Insomniac, and a year later he joined the cast of the thriller The Last Stop in Yuma County. These projects steer clear of the spotlight of the big platforms but allow him to maintain absolute control over his performances.
In 2024, Dana Ashbrook completed his role in the production The Groomsmen, filmed entirely on location in North Carolina.
