Daphne Ashbrook grew up behind the scenes in California. Her father directed theater and her mother acted, so the acting bug was in the family living room long before she signed her first contract. She began working professionally as a teenager.
'80s television was her real school.
She took part in shows that are now TV archaeology, such as Falcon Crest or Knight Rider. But it was in 1985 that she landed a major role in Our Family Honor. That production didn't last long, but it helped the industry notice her ability to hold close-ups without blinking.
In 1993, she played Melora Pazlar in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. The character was an officer who needed an exoskeleton to move in standard gravity. It was a physically demanding shoot, due to the harnesses and cables used to simulate the buoyancy of her home planet.
Three years later came the role that still follows her around at fan conventions. In 1996, she played Dr. Grace Holloway in the TV movie Doctor Who. She was the woman who gave the Doctor his first on-screen kiss, breaking decades of British chastity tradition.
That kiss infuriated the most purist fans.
The film was meant to relaunch the franchise in the United States, but the audience numbers didn't support the project. It only earned a 9% share of the screen during its American release. Despite the commercial setback, Ashbrook joined the exclusive group of actors who have worked in the two biggest science fiction sagas in history.
During the nineties and early two thousands, she jumped from one procedural to another. She appeared in JAG, Murder, She Wrote, and The Guardian. In 2003, she joined the cast of The O.C. as Daphne Cooper, one of the main characters' mothers.
Hollywood doesn't always know what to do with talent that doesn't shout.
That stretch in teen drama gave her a different kind of visibility with a younger audience. But she always preferred the intimacy of theater or the depth of independent scripts. In 2012, she decided to sort through her memories and published her autobiography, titled A Mirror Misaligned.
The book details the highs and lows of a woman who never wanted to be a tabloid star. It coldly recounts what it's like to survive in the industry once you stop being the ingenue of the moment. Because the system is often cruel to actresses over forty.
During the 2010s, she returned to the Doctor Who universe through audio dramas from the Big Finish production company. In 2012, she recorded Tales from the Vault, playing a new character and moving completely away from her original role in the nineties film.
Ashbrook keeps a low profile away from the spotlight, focusing on voice-over work and occasional appearances in low-budget films. Her most recent recorded feature film role was in 2018 with Restraint. Filming was completed in less than twenty days of production.
