The Clerk Who Didn't Have to Pretend

Kevin Sussman worked at a real comic book store in Manhattan long before the world knew him as Stuart Bloom. He spent four years surrounded by staples and collector's editions while trying to make a name for himself as an actor. That experience was not a deliberate acting method but a financial necessity of his youth.

He studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and later with the legendary Uta Hagen. Those years of training allowed him to refine a range that goes far beyond physical comedy or the loser stereotype. Sussman handles silence and the awkward stare with a precision that only comes after many hours on stage.

He made his film debut in Liberty Heights in 1999 under director Barry Levinson. Shortly after, he appeared in Almost Famous, playing a young man who barely managed to stand out amid all the rock and roll. These were small roles, but they helped pay the bills in a city that gives nothing away.

Comedy is a serious business.

His face began to look familiar to the general public thanks to commercials and brief appearances in prestige series. In 2002 he appeared in Sweet Home Alabama, and a year earlier he was in the raunchy Wet Hot American Summer. But his big break came with long-running television.

The supporting player who took over the set

His role as Walter in Ugly Betty during 2006 gave him the national television visibility he needed in the United States. He played the protagonist's boyfriend in a storyline that demanded a constant balance between pathetic and tender. Sussman kept up the pace through the entire first season.

In 2009 he joined the set of The Big Bang Theory for a role that was initially meant to be a one-off. The writers saw something in his interaction with the main group and decided that his comic book store would become the recurring hangout for the lead characters. Sussman was paid 50,000 dollars per episode in the show's final seasons.

And the gamble paid off.

His character became a fixture of the storyline without having to belong to the core group of friends. Kevin's ability to evoke both pity and laughter at the same time made him an indispensable asset for the production company. He went from guest star to a main credited role starting in the sixth season.

Away from the cameras, Sussman has always kept a low profile, far from the spotlight of the tabloid press. He is a technical professional who prefers to talk about story structure rather than his private life. In fact, he has co-written several pilots for networks such as CBS and FOX, always looking for a creative outlet behind the camera.

A change of pace after success

Ending a globally successful series is often a curse for many comedy actors. But Sussman decided to break away from the image of Stuart as soon as he had the chance. In 2022 he played Mark Roessler in the miniseries The Dropout for the streaming platform Hulu.

In this production, he played a gray scientist caught up in the multimillion-dollar fraud at the company Theranos. It was a restrained performance, with none of the humor. Critics praised his ability to hold intensely dramatic scenes opposite Amanda Seyfried.

Because success in Hollywood doesn't always take the form of a leading star.

For 2023, he appeared in seven episodes of the series Lessons in Chemistry, playing a local TV director. It's a role that connects with his past but from a much more evident acting maturity. In this period piece, he shows that his look fits perfectly with the styles of the 1950s and 1960s.

Sussman continues to balance his acting work with writing his own projects. In 2024 he maintains his residence in Los Angeles and regularly takes part in pop culture conventions around the world. The syndication contract for his main series guarantees him lifetime residual income regardless of his future projects.
