Synopsis of PEN15

Maya and Anna are two thirteen-year-old girls in seventh grade at a school in the United States in 2000. Neither of them fits in completely with their classmates, and both try to carve out a place in a group made up of kids their actual age. Maya is shy and sensitive, and she takes after her Japanese mother in particular. Anna, the best singer at school, turns to music for refuge when things go wrong at home. The series was created by Anna Konkle, Sam Zvibleman and Maya Erskine, who also star in it, each 31 years old when the first season began, and it airs on Hulu. It's a comedy about middle school as it really happened, based on the creators' own childhood experiences.

«R-Rated. Cringeworthy. Middle school.»

Trivia about PEN15

The title comes from a school prank that involves tricking someone into writing the word "PEN15" on their hand, which looks like "penis," and then asking if they want to join the "Pen 15 Club."

The series is based on the childhood experiences of its creators, Erskine and Konkle, although in reality they didn't meet until they were in college.

In the sex scenes, underage actors were replaced by adult stunt doubles.

The series was originally planned for three seasons, but filming of the second season was delayed significantly by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The first season has a 97% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with an average score of 8.04 out of 10 based on 47 reviews.

Many of the props were bought at secondhand stores in Los Angeles and Palm Springs, and some items, such as Teen Beat magazines and a vintage Unisonic phone, were purchased on eBay.

The second season earned an Emmy nomination for writing after the first season had been recognized in that category.
