Synopsis of grown-ish

Grown-ish is a Freeform sitcom created by Kenya Barris and Larry Wilmore, and a spin-off of Black-ish. Zoey Johnson, the eldest daughter of the Johnson family, heads off to study at the University of Liberal Arts of California, known as Cal U, a fictional campus located in Los Angeles. Zoey wants to take her first steps toward adulthood, but she soon discovers that the path doesn't go the way she imagined now that she has left the family nest. Between classes and campus life, she builds her own circle of friends. The series, starring Yara Shahidi, follows how she adjusts to this new world alongside the classmates she meets along the way.

Trivia about grown-ish

The episode "Liberal Arts" from season three of Black-ish worked as a backdoor pilot for the spin-off and showed Zoey heading off to college.

Before it was called Grown-ish, the series had another working title. Parnell and Jackson reprised their roles from the pilot, and Emily Arlook replaced Mallory Sparks as Miriam.

The musical duo Chloe & Halle played twins Sky and Jazz, marking their move into scripted television. Both were part of the cast from the start of the project.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Freeform announced in May 2020 that the remaining episodes of season three would premiere in 2021.

Season six was split into two parts. The second part arrived in March 2024, almost a year after the premiere of the first.

Marcus Scribner joined the cast in season five to reprise his lead role as Andre Johnson Jr., a character from Black-ish.

Season six featured appearances by Lil Yachty, Anderson .Paak, The Free Nationals, Latto, Kelly Rowland, Rich Paul, and Malcolm-Jamal Warner; the latter played Doug's father.
