Sadie Stanley did not go through the usual circuit of endless auditions in Los Angeles during her childhood. In 2018, she sent a video recorded at her home in South Carolina for an open casting call for Disney Channel. They were looking for the new Kim Possible, and she had no major credits on her résumé.
And it worked.
But making the leap from animated character to live action for such a beloved figure is often a trap for novice actors. In 2019, the movie hit theaters with mixed reviews for its childlike tone. Stanley held her own under the pressure from the original fans (an audience that was already approaching their thirties) and avoided being typecast as a Mickey Mouse Club type.
Before the end of that year she landed a recurring role on the Netflix comedy Dead to Me. She played Parker, a teenager with complicated romantic interests that had nothing to do with the action heroine of her debut. It was her first experience on a prestigious international film set.
In 2020, she shot the Netflix original movie The Sleepover. The project aimed to recreate the success of the family adventure films of the 1980s. Stanley led the young cast in a production that stayed in the top 10 on the platform for several weeks across more than thirty countries.
The change of pace was total.
Her big dramatic break didn't come until 2023 with the second season of the anthology series Cruel Summer. In this Freeform production she played Megan Landry. The plot required her to portray the same character across three different timelines, with clear physical and psychological changes.
That performance erased any trace of her as a child actress. Stanley had to film scenes of high emotional intensity and criminal tension in Vancouver. Critics praised her ability to sustain suspense without falling back on the usual tropes of the American teen genre.
In 2022, she appeared in the independent film Somewhere in Queens, directed by Ray Romano. The shoot focused on the dynamics of an Italian American family in New York. Stanley played Dani, the protagonist's girlfriend, in a role that demanded an almost documentary-like naturalness.
Her name began to surface in the offices of major studios for big-budget projects. In 2024, the production company Sony Pictures confirmed her casting for the new installment of the Karate Kid franchise. Filming was scheduled to begin in Montreal in the spring of that same year.
The movie features Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio. Stanley plays the female lead in a story that aims to unify the different timelines of the franchise that began in 1984. It's her first major studio project with a simultaneous global release in theaters.
The release of this new installment of Karate Kid was set for May 30, 2025 in the United States.
