The method of the military man's daughter

Julie Anne Smith soon discovered that her legal name wouldn't work in film. The actors' union already had a Julie Smith and an Anne Smith in its files from 1983. She had to improvise a new identity by mixing her parents' names, and that's how Julianne Moore was born.

She grew up moving from one military base to another around the world because her father was an Army judge. That geographic instability gave her an powers of observation that other actors take decades to develop. In 1985, she landed a dual role in the soap opera As the World Turns and won an Emmy three years later.

That was the first serious paycheck of her life.

Despite her success on television, Moore wanted to make auteur films. In 1993, she appeared in Vidas cruzadas (Short Cuts) by Robert Altman and drew critical attention for a scene in which she argued while wearing no pants. It wasn't cheap provocation but a script choice she defended with complete ease.

Her alliance with the strange

In 1995, she starred in Safe under the direction of Todd Haynes. She played a housewife who develops a deadly allergy to the modern environment, and that collaboration changed her career forever. Moore became known for playing characters who suffer inside while maintaining a facade of suburban perfection.

The industry didn't know where to place her.

But offers from major studios started coming in. In 1997, she filmed The Lost World: Jurassic Park with Steven Spielberg for purely financial and logistical reasons. She needed the money to pay the bills while she also took on risky projects like Boogie Nights that same year.

Her role as Amber Waves earned her first Oscar nomination. She played a porn actress who loses custody of her son and showed she wasn't afraid of physical or emotional exposure. She was turned down for several commercial roles for having too many freckles or a body that didn't fit the beauty standards of the 1990s.

And her bet on independent film paid off.

During the shoot of Magnolia in 1999, she worked with Paul Thomas Anderson in a role full of hysteria and guilt. Moore filmed her most intense scenes in just a few days because the production schedule was grueling. That's how she managed to string together projects with directors like the Coen brothers on The Big Lebowski.

The Recognition and the Almodóvar Factor

The years went by and nominations kept piling up, but the big prize still didn't come. In 2002, she did something rare by earning two Oscar nominations in the same year, for Far from Heaven and The Hours. She lost both, but her Hollywood pay climbed to seven million dollars per film for studio productions.

The Academy Award finally came in 2015 for Still Alice. She played a linguistics professor with early-onset Alzheimer's, and to prepare for the role she spent months visiting patient associations. She didn't want to fall into the easy sentimentality that tends to win over awards audiences.

In 2024, she starred in The Room Next Door under the direction of Pedro Almodóvar. It was the Manchego director's first English-language feature, and Moore shared the screen with Tilda Swinton in a story about friendship and dying with dignity. Filming took place between Madrid and New York on a tight budget by American standards.

Moore balances her work in front of the camera with writing children's books in the Freckleface Strawberry series. In September 2024, the Almodóvar film won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival after a 18-minute standing ovation. The movie grossed €1.2 million in its first opening weekend in Spain.
