Pat Healy has the look of the neighbor hiding something uncomfortable in the basement. That's not an insult. It's his biggest financial asset in an industry that tends to prefer square jaws and toothpaste-commercial smiles.
Born in Chicago, he honed his craft on the stage before realizing his place was on the edges of the screen. In 1997, he landed a small role in Home Alone 3. It was the start of an endless run of supporting characters that almost nobody remembered after leaving the movie theater.
That phase of anonymity ended in 2007 with Great World of Sound. He played a music industry con man with a mix of pathos and coldness that caught the attention of the independent circuit. His performance earned him a nomination at the Gotham Awards and pulled him out of the extras pit with a real line.
That was the first time the industry put his name on the list of dangerous supporting actors.
His collaboration with Ti West on The Innkeepers in 2011 gave him his own space in genre cinema. But the real impact came a year later. In 2012, he starred in Compliance under the direction of Craig Zobel.
In this film, he played a man who manipulates the employees of a fast-food restaurant over the phone into committing degrading acts. It was a psychological role built on voice and invisible authority. The film caused walkouts at theaters during the Sundance Film Festival because of the rawness of its story.
In 2013, he returned to exploring human despair with Cheap Thrills. The plot followed a wealthy man who pays two friends to complete increasingly violent dares. Healy proved he could carry an entire film without breaking a sweat.
And the gamble paid off.
He didn't just wait for the phone to ring with offers to play psychos. He wrote scripts, and in 2017, he made the leap to directing with Take Me. The film was a dark comedy produced by the Duplass brothers, shot on a tight budget and with few locations.
In 2022, he faced one of the strangest challenges of his television career. He replaced actor Don Harvey in the role of Jeff during the final season of Better Call Saul. Changing the face of a character the audience already knew was a risky move.
Healy gave the character a more pathetic and less menacing air than the original. That creative decision divided the series' fans across internet forums, but it fit the twilight tone of the story's ending.
Martin Scorsese cast him for a brief role in Killers of the Flower Moon during 2023. He appears on screen for only a short time, but his physical presence brings the gritty realism the director wanted for the atmosphere of Oklahoma.
In 2024, his filmography listed 115 credited appearances in fiction productions.
