Blake Clark commanded an infantry unit in the 5th Infantry Division during the Vietnam War. That is no minor detail in his story, because his military past shaped his stage presence and a voice that sounds like it was run through a filter of gravel and tobacco. When he returned to the United States, he decided his path was on stage, though not with a gun in his hands.
In the 1970s, he began frequenting comedy clubs and refining a direct style. But his real break on screen came in 1981 with an appearance on The Greatest American Hero. From then on, his face became a fixture on television around the world.
War doesn't allow for jokes.
Clark's professional relationship with Adam Sandler is one of the longest-running in American industry. It started organically in the nineties and continued for decades across nearly twenty productions. In 1998, he played the farmer with an unintelligible accent in The Waterboy, and audiences immediately connected with that chaotic energy.
That is the key to his longevity in the industry. Clark isn't after the spotlight, but he fills the frame with a natural ease that few supporting actors manage. In 2004, he appeared in 50 First Dates, playing the father of Drew Barrymore, and brought a mix of toughness and tenderness that balanced the romantic comedy.
Many consider him the lucky charm of Happy Madison.
But his work isn't limited to productions by his close friends. On the series Home Improvement, he brought Harry to life for several seasons between 1994 and 1999. That hardware store owner was the perfect counterpoint to the lead character's insecurities.
Nobody expected that the Vietnam War veteran would end up voicing a toy dog.
The death of his friend Jim Varney in 2000 left a void in the Toy Story franchise. Clark took on the challenge of voicing Slinky Dog starting with the third installment, released in 2010. He didn't settle for a cheap imitation; instead, he respected the essence of the original character while bringing his own vocal texture.
In 2019, he repeated the experience in Toy Story 4 and proved that his voice acting skills were just as strong as his physical comedy. Acting in front of a microphone demands technical precision, and Clark had mastered it after years in radio and voice dubbing.
In 2023, the actor took part in the animated film Leo, directed by Robert Marianetti and Robert Smigel. The Netflix production had a budget of $70 million, and Clark voiced the character Cooky. It premiered on the streaming platform on November 21 of that same year.
