Karen Malina White

Karen Malina White kicked off her career with unusual force. In 1989, she played Kaneesha Carter in the movie Lean on Me, and her presence opposite Morgan Freeman was a standout. That young woman from Philadelphia came with an impeccable academic background from Howard University.

It was a clean start.

The television of the nineties gave her room to try very different kinds of roles. In 1990, she joined The Cosby Show as Charmaine Brown and appeared in the show's last two seasons. Her scripted work didn't stop there, though, as she immediately moved on to the spin-off A Different World.

The School of TV Comedy

In 1996, she joined the cast of Malcolm & Eddie as Nicolette Powell. It was her most extensive project, with a total of 89 episodes filmed through 2000. There, she developed a style of physical comedy that moved away from her early dramatic roles in film.

And the industry knew how to make use of that energy. White didn't limit herself to live-action productions and successfully explored voice acting as well.

In 2001, she began her animation career with The Proud Family. She provided the original voice of Dijonay Jones and maintained that professional bond with Disney for decades. She reprised the role in the 2005 movie and in the series revival titled The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder in 2022.

It wasn't all about stepping in front of the camera.

The Turn Toward Dark Realism

A darker shift in tone came in 2022 with the production of Ryan Murphy for Netflix. She played Shirley Hughes in Dahmer: Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story and set aside the laughs of sitcoms. She conveyed a mother's grief with restraint and without artifice.

Drama called for a different language.

In 2023, she joined the cast of The Upshaws, taking on the role of Hilda starting in season four. The show is filmed in front of a live audience at studios in Los Angeles. Her contract for these episodes included a temporary exclusivity clause for the duration of filming at Sunset Bronson Studios.
