Mikhail Baryshnikov was the man who ended Lea Thompson's dream. He told her to her face that she was too short and that her ankles wouldn't hold up the weight of a prima ballerina at the American Ballet Theatre. That sharp blow in 1982 pushed her off the dance stage and onto movie sets in Los Angeles.
She started out eating hamburgers in Burger King commercials. But her first major role came in 1983 with All the Right Moves. There she shared the screen with a young Tom Cruise who was already showing signs of becoming a global star. Thompson played a small-town girl looking for a way out of a stifling industrial city.
Her luck changed overnight.
In 1985, she accepted the role of Lorraine Baines in Back to the Future. She had to sit through three hours of makeup sessions every day to age and look like Michael J. Fox's mother. Audiences didn't know that she was actually only ten days younger than her on-screen son. The film grossed $381 million worldwide and put her at the center of the industry.
That massive hit gave her the freedom to choose her projects. In 1986, she starred in Howard the Duck, produced by George Lucas. Critics tore the film apart, and audiences turned their backs on an anthropomorphic duck that cost a fortune in special effects. That financial setback slowed her rise in major Hollywood productions.
The duck broke everything.
But Thompson knew how to move toward more intimate dramas. In 1987, she shot Some Kind of Wonderful, where she met director Howard Deutch. They married shortly after and became one of the most stable couples in the industry. During that period, she appeared in titles like Casual Sex? and the third installment of the time-travel saga that ended in 1990.
In the mid-nineties, she found a home on television. In 1995, she premiered Caroline in the City and became the friendly face of NBC for four seasons. She won a People's Choice Award and proved that her career did not depend solely on summer blockbusters.
And the gamble paid off.
At the turn of the century, she decided she wanted to be in charge. She started by directing episodes of the series she was working on and eventually directed episodes of big-budget productions. In 2017, she directed her first feature film, The Year of Spectacular Men, in which she also acted alongside her two daughters. It was an independently financed family project.
In 2022, she stepped behind the camera to direct episodes of Star Trek: Picard. Her technical knowledge of television pacing also led her to direct episodes of Resident Alien during the same period. Thompson now prefers the director's chair because she says it gives her a level of control that acting did not.
In 2023, she returned to the spotlight on screen in the Canadian series The Spencer Sisters. She plays a mystery novelist who solves real crimes alongside her police-officer daughter. Filming of the first season in Winnipeg used a budget of $15 million for its first ten episodes.
