The Toll of Early Success

Jessy Schram signed her first contract with a talent agency at age ten. There were no grand artistic epiphanies in her home in Skokie, Illinois; her path moved naturally from child modeling to TV commercials for fast-food brands. Before turning eighteen, she had logged enough hours of auditions to understand that the Chicago industry was too small for her.

In 2005, she moved to Los Angeles and within a few months was landing supporting roles on mainstream series. She played Hannah Griffith in Veronica Mars, which put her on the radar of major networks. But it was her role as Susan Davis in the TV movie series Jane Doe that gave her constant on-screen exposure between 2005 and 2008.

And the plan worked.

The actress avoided getting stuck in a rut thanks to a natural ability to move between procedural drama and science fiction without viewers noticing the seams. In 2011, she joined the cast of Falling Skies to play Karen Nadler. It was a physically demanding shoot in which Steven Spielberg sought faces that conveyed vulnerability and a hidden toughness beneath a fragile appearance.

Fairy Tales and Hallmark's Safe Haven

In late 2011, ABC cast her as Cinderella in Once Upon a Time. The casting was based on her classic look, but Schram brought a note of world-weariness to the character that broke with Disney's usual canon. Her real financial and professional stability, however, came from a route less prestigious for critics but extremely profitable for studios: TV movies.

Hallmark made her one of its go-to faces starting in 2017, with titles such as The Birthday Wish and A Royal New Year’s Eve. These are express shoots lasting about two weeks, with tight budgets and scripts that leave no room for improvisation. Schram embraced the romantic lead role in rural or Christmas settings because she understood that a heavy workload is the only real guarantee of survival in Hollywood.

Hollywood doesn't hand out anything for free.

She balanced these projects with appearances on Mad Men and Nashville. On the latter, she played Cash Gray for 2016, showing that her training as a singer-songwriter was more than a youthful hobby. She wrote her own songs and performed them live during the episodes of the musical series' fourth season.

The White Coat and the Permanent Contract

In 2020, Schram's career took a turn toward complete stability when she joined Chicago Med. She plays Dr. Hannah Asher, a gynecologist struggling with a heroin addiction, the most complex dramatic challenge of her career. The actress had to study emergency room protocols and the behavior of addicts in recovery to avoid playing an easy caricature.

And the gamble paid off.

After a temporary exit from the storyline, she returned in 2022 on a long-term contract that keeps her tied to Dick Wolf's franchise. In 2023, she starred in Mystic Christmas for Hallmark while still filming episodes of the ninth season of the medical drama. She is one of the few actresses who manages to keep one foot in prime time on a major network and the other in the domestic streaming market at the same time.

Filming the tenth season of Chicago Med in 2024 required 14-hour days at the Chicago studios in subzero temperatures. The production ended the year averaging 6.5 million viewers per episode in the United States.
