Jeffrey Combs never set out to become a icon of low-budget cinema while studying at the Pacific Conservatory of Performing Arts. His training was purely theatrical and classical. But in 1985 he accepted the role of Herbert West in Re-Animator, and his career became forever tied to dark laboratories and the work of H.P. Lovecraft.
That shoot was chaotic and cheap. Combs played a medical student obsessed with defeating death through a fluorescent reagent. The film cost less than one million dollars.
And the gamble paid off.
Director Stuart Gordon found in Combs an ally who could deliver the most absurd lines with terrifying seriousness. In 1986 the two reunited for From Beyond, where the actor had to deal with sticky practical effects and a premise built on parallel dimensions. That period defined his public image as a cult performer who wasn't afraid to get covered in fake blood.
Television offered him a different opportunity starting in 1994. Combs joined the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine universe to play supporting characters, but his ability to work under heavy layers of makeup impressed the producers. He ended up playing Weyoun and the Ferengi Brunt simultaneously in the same series.
Some days he spent twelve hours in the makeup chair to film scenes featuring two different characters in a single day. But the actor never complained about the technical process. In 2001, he joined the cast of Star Trek: Enterprise as Commander Shran. His portrayal of a blue-skinned Andorian with mobile antennae is remembered by fans of the franchise as one of the highlights of those four seasons.
In 1996 he had a pivotal creative collaboration with Peter Jackson. The New Zealand director cast him in The Frighteners, where Combs played Milton Dammers, a paranoid and physically haggard FBI agent. It was one of his few roles in a big-budget production before Jackson went off to shoot his Middle-earth trilogy.
It wasn't all horror.
Combs lent his voice to animated characters with a highly recognizable vocal cadence. In 2004 he brought to life the Question in the series Justice League Unlimited, giving the character a conspiracy-minded tone that fit the cartoon perfectly. He also voiced the medic Ratchet in the series Transformers Prime between 2010 and 2013.
Away from the Hollywood spotlight, the actor rekindled his love of one-man theater. In 2009 he premiered Nevermore, a play in which he portrayed an Edgar Allan Poe sunk in poverty and alcohol. Critics praised his physical resemblance to the writer and the intensity of a monologue that ran ninety minutes without intermission.
In 2014 he joined the cast of the series Gotham to play the Patient Manager in a multi-episode arc. His presence added an air of strangeness to a plot that was already dark. Combs has always preferred psychologically complex supporting roles over flat leading parts.
Still active.
In 2021 he returned to the galactic franchise, lending his voice to an evil computer in the animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks. The episode was a direct nod to his long career in the saga.
His film project in 2023 was Suitable Flesh, directed by Joe Lynch. In this movie he returned to Lovecraftian settings, sharing the cast with Heather Graham. Filming was completed in just three weeks in the state of Mississippi.
