Learning instinct

Lance Henriksen could not read when he landed his first professional role. He was thirty years old and carried a childhood of running away from home, stints in juvenile detention and years of physical labor as a merchant marine. To memorize the scripts for his first stage plays, he asked friends to read them aloud until the sound of the words was fixed in his memory.

He learned to read at thirty.

In the 1970s, he decided his place was in New York. He enrolled at the Neighborhood Playhouse, where he began refining a technique based more on animal observation than academic theory. In 1975, he had a brief appearance in Dog Day Afternoon under the direction of Sidney Lumet. But movies still didn't know what to do with this man with hollow cheeks and a weary gaze.

And it worked.

During that formative period he met a young James Cameron, who was not yet king of the world. Cameron was fascinated by Henriksen's intensity and his ability to convey a quiet menace. They soon began collaborating on projects that are now part of the technical history of genre cinema.

Forging an essential face

In 1984, James Cameron wrote the script for The Terminator with Henriksen in mind for the role of the killing machine. The actor even showed up at the production company's offices in character as the cyborg (leather jacket and tinfoil on his teeth) to scare the executives. In the end, the studio insisted on Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Henriksen had to settle for the role of Detective Vukovich.

His face is his greatest tool.

But the reward came in 1986 with the shoot for Aliens. His portrayal of the android Bishop avoided every robot cliché of the soulless machine, offering a blend of vulnerability and mechanical precision. In one of the film's most famous scenes (the one with the knife between the fingers), Henriksen suggested speeding up the movement so it would look superhuman.

In 1996, television gave him the leading role that film had only partly granted him. Chris Carter chose him to star in Millennium as Frank Black. For three seasons, Henriksen carried the weight of a dark, pessimistic series that demanded constant emotional strain. He earned three consecutive Golden Globe nominations for this work before Fox canceled the show in 1999.

Maturity between clay and drama

As he got older, Henriksen moved away from big productions and took refuge in independent film and his passion for ceramics. In his California studio he spends hours shaping clay pieces that he later sells on his own website. For him, acting and sculpting are identical processes that require getting your hands dirty and waiting for the form to appear on its own.

In 2020, he received one of the best reviews of his career for Falling. Viggo Mortensen called him to play a conservative, hot-tempered father suffering from senile dementia. It was a grueling shoot in which Henriksen had to draw on very dark parts of his own personal history to make the character's fits of rage believable.

But the actor has never stopped working on low-budget projects or lending his voice to video games such as the Mass Effect series. In 2023, he took part in the drama On Sacred Ground, playing a supporting character in a story about the Dakota Access Pipeline.

Lance Henriksen currently lives on a country estate, where he still makes pottery every day. In 2024, he had more than 250 acting credits on his IMDb profile. His latest ceramic piece sold at auction for two thousand five hundred dollars because of its experimental finish.
