David Boreanaz was walking his dog through a residential neighborhood in Los Angeles when a talent scout stopped him in the middle of the street. He wasn't looking for fame or had a plan to break into television studios, but that chance encounter changed the course of his personal career. Before that day, he worked parking cars or painting houses to pay the bills in a city that gives nothing away.
His real debut came in an episode of Married... with Children in 1993.
He played a cocky biker who got beaten up by Al Bundy. It was a brief and forgettable role, but it helped his name start circulating in the casting offices of the Fox network. In 1997, he landed the audition that would win him the role of Angel in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and his professional life took off dramatically.
The gamble paid off.
The character of the vampire with a soul was so popular that producers decided to give him his own show. In 1999, Angel premiered as a standalone series with a much darker and more urban tone than the original. Boreanaz had to carry the weight of being the lead actor across 110 episodes filmed under grueling schedules.
Many actors of his generation disappeared after the end of their early projects. Boreanaz preferred steady work over chasing fame in big-budget films. In 2005, he accepted the role of FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth in Bones and formed a television partnership with Emily Deschanel that lasted twelve consecutive seasons on air.
And he did it without public complaints or scandals on set.
During the years he spent on this crime drama, the actor learned to direct. He stepped behind the camera for eleven episodes of the series, because he understood that the industry values someone who can manage a budget more than someone who just memorizes lines in front of the mirror. In 2017, he jumped straight into SEAL Team to play a military man suffering from post-traumatic stress.
This project required him to shoot in adverse weather conditions and use real combat gear. The physical demands led to several injuries to his knees and back (which is common in realistic action productions). But his greatest achievement was serving as executive producer on more than one hundred episodes of the show. As a result, his influence over creative decisions grew exponentially over the years.
Boreanaz is not a method actor who seeks radical transformation in every role. His style is based on reliability and an imposing physical presence that fills the frame effortlessly. In 2021, the series SEAL Team moved from conventional television to the streaming platform Paramount Plus to reach a more mature audience.
Filming of the seventh and final season of SEAL Team wrapped in 2024. Production costs per episode in this final stage exceeded nine million dollars due to the logistics of international locations.
