Rick Gonzalez was born in Brooklyn in 1979 and never hid his Dominican and Puerto Rican heritage. Before turning twenty he was already walking the halls of the High School of the Performing Arts in New York, the same school that inspired the movie Fame. His real debut came in 1997 with a small role in the TV movie Thicker Than Blood.
But mainstream recognition didn't arrive until 2005. In Coach Carter, he played Timo Cruz, a rebellious young man seeking redemption through basketball. That performance alongside Samuel L. Jackson showcased his ability to embody street-smart characters with raw vulnerability. The shoot demanded military-level physical training, and Gonzalez completed every session without complaint.
He wasn't looking to be a poster star.
In 2003 he appeared in Old School, where he shared the screen with Will Ferrell. It was a necessary foray into raunchy comedy that let him step away from the dramatic typecasting that often follows Latino actors in Hollywood. And it worked, because offers began diversifying right away.
Television became his most stable home during the first decade of the twenty-first century. In 2007, he joined the cast of Reaper to play Ben Gonzalez. The series blended dark humor with supernatural elements, a register in which the actor proved he could keep up with the pace of a sitcom without losing his natural touch.
In 2016, his career took a different direction when he entered the DC Comics universe. He donned the Wild Dog mask in the fifth season of Arrow. What began as a temporary collaboration became a permanent contract that lasted until the series finale in 2020. He appeared in 77 episodes of The CW show and became a key piece of Stephen Amell's team.
But music was always there.
Under the stage name Realm Reality, he released several hip-hop projects. In 2011 he put out his mixtape The Invisible Man, and in 2013 he collaborated with producer The Alchemist on the album In the Grind. Gonzalez uses rap as a creative outlet when the cameras of the major studios go dark.
After the superhero storylines wrapped up, he sought projects with a more restrained tone. In 2021 he played Alfonso Nuñez in The Lost Symbol, the television adaptation of Dan Brown's novel. The series lasted only one season, but it showed he fit perfectly into the suspense thriller genre.
The phone rang again in 2022.
Dick Wolf's franchise signed him to join Law & Order: Organized Crime. In this production he plays Detective Bobby Reyes, an undercover expert who works side by side with Elliot Stabler. His character debuted in the third season and quickly gained weight in the police storylines due to his past tied to the foster care system.
And the work never stops. Throughout 2024 the actor kept a steady presence on American television while managing his own independent production company. The renewal of his contract for the fifth season of the police series was signed with a fifteen percent salary increase over his original 2022 agreement.
