China Anne McClain was born in a recording studio in Atlanta in 1998. Her father produced Solange Knowles and her mother wrote R&B songs. Rhythm was in her blood, so to speak. At seven, a music executive heard her sing and called Rob Hardy to come see her.
And that's how she ended up on the set of The Gospel in 2005.
It was a direct entry into film, with no acting school detour. On that shoot, she met Tyler Perry. The director saw something in her and cast her in House of Payne in 2007. That TBS series gave her solid experience across more than fifty episodes.
In 2007, she also shot Daddy's Little Girls alongside her real-life sisters. Pay for child actors in independent productions like this usually follows the industry's minimum union scales. But the visibility she gained opened the doors to the Disney machine.
Disney Channel came calling in 2011 with A.N.T. Farm. The company was looking for a successor to the all-around entertainer profiles it usually churned out in its offices. She could sing, dance and had a comedic timing unusual for a twelve-year-old girl.
"Calling All the Monsters" sold 25,000 copies in its first week in the United States. But the contract with Disney was a double-edged sword.
The industry quickly pigeonholed her as a child star.
For three seasons she led the series while recording soundtracks and making guest appearances on other network shows. In 2014 the series ended, and McClain had to find her place in a market that no longer saw her as a little girl. That same year she won Sing Your Face Off.
In 2017 she donned the villain's look in Descendants 2, playing Uma. The role allowed her to move away from the good-girl image of her early career. The production of that sequel cost about $15 million and was a ratings hit on cable television.
But her leap into more physically demanding roles came in 2018 with Black Lightning.
She played Jennifer Pierce in the DC Comics universe. It was an intense shoot that lasted four seasons on The CW. The series averaged one million viewers per episode during its first run.
The death of her friend Cameron Boyce in 2019 changed the way she saw the business.
She decided to be more selective about her public appearances.
In 2021 she announced she would leave the superhero series earlier than expected to focus on her own projects. In 2024 she returned to the world of villains' children with Descendants: The Rise of Red. She reprised the role of Uma under the direction of Jennifer Phang.
The shoot took place entirely in Atlanta. The Disney+ production racked up millions of views in its first three days of release. Budgets for these streaming productions typically hover around 20 million dollars.
