Chloe Celeste Hosterman was born in Washington State, and before turning fifteen she had already realized that acting was an emergency exit. Her father took his own life when she was a teenager. That trauma shaped her legal identity: she chose to be called Dove, in memory of the nickname he used to call her.
The name change was her first act of creative control.
In 2013, Disney Channel gave her a dual role in the series Liv and Maddie. Playing two twin sisters was a technical challenge that lasted four seasons. She won a Daytime Emmy in 2018 for that display of acting precision in front of a green screen.
In 2015, Descendants premiered. The film aimed to capitalize on the catalog of classic villains, and Dove took on the role of Mal. The project spawned sequels in 2017 and 2019 that brought in millions in merchandise revenue. But locked-in contracts began to stifle her ambitions beyond the children's market.
Her push for change came from the theater.
She moved to London in 2019 to star in the musical The Light in the Piazza at the Southbank Centre. The decision was meant to distance her from the manufactured pop-product image the industry had imposed on her. She worked alongside Renée Fleming and received reviews that praised her vocal power, far from studio synthesizers.
In 2021, she was announced for the pilot of Supergirl Squad for the CW network. The project suffered serious script problems and was scrapped after the first episode was shot. That forced break allowed her to focus on her music career independently.
The release of the single Boyfriend in 2022 marked a clear aesthetic break. The lyrics openly explored her sexuality, and the production moved away from the bright pop of her TV years. It reached No. 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart without the backing of a major corporate marketing campaign.
Because the market no longer saw her as a teen princess.
During 2023, she released her debut studio album, a two-part project titled Alchemical. On the big screen, she appeared in the movie Vengeance in 2022, playing a supporting character that broke from her usual heroine roles. She also joined the cast of the series Schmigadoon! between 2021 and 2023, where she parodied the conventions of classic musical theater.
In 2024, production of her new film projects was kept under strict confidentiality agreements. Industry data indicates that her fee per television episode is above $50,000.
