Cole Sprouse was born in a hospital room in Arezzo, Italy, in 1992. He didn't set foot on American soil until he was four months old, but his destiny was already sealed by his family's financial need. He started working before he had clear memories of his own childhood, because his mother was chasing a financial stability that only diaper commercials could offer.
In 1999, he played Julian in the movie Big Daddy alongside Adam Sandler. It was his first real taste of the Hollywood machine. That film, which grossed $163 million at the box office, put him on the map before he even knew what a script was.
And the gamble paid off.
During his Disney Channel years, between 2005 and 2011, he starred in The Suite Life of Zack & Cody. The money and fame that came with it eventually suffocated him. Success on cable TV is often a golden cage for teenagers, and Sprouse decided he didn't want to end up as a broken toy of the industry.
He enrolled at New York University in 2011 to study archaeology. He wanted to step away from the spotlight and the child prodigy label. During those four years of academic retreat, he devoted himself to fashion photography and digging at archaeological sites in Europe and Asia.
But art-house cinema always stayed on his radar.
He returned to acting in 2017 as Jughead Jones in the series Riverdale. The production on The CW ran until 2023 and allowed him to rebuild his public image from a darker, more cynical angle. The character gave him the freedom to explore an acting side that Disney had denied him for years.
In 2019, he starred in the romantic drama A Cinderella Story. The film grossed more than $90 million worldwide on a tight budget by major studio standards. It confirmed that his name could still draw young audiences into theaters.
Sprouse runs a secondary Instagram account where he photographs fans who try to snap pictures of him on the sly. It's a way of taking back control over his own privacy (a concept he lost before he turned ten).
He has never hidden that his return to sets was a purely financial decision after finishing his university studies.
In 2022, he appeared in the sci-fi comedy Moonshot for HBO Max. Critics weren't especially kind to the film, but the actor no longer sought constant approval from the specialized press. His interest shifted toward projects with a more distinct and personal aesthetic.
In 2024, he worked under Zelda Williams on Lisa Frankenstein. It was a project that aimed to recapture the look of the 1980s, with a script written by Diablo Cody. In this film he played a reanimated corpse and showed that his physical range had matured far beyond sitcom roles.
By the end of 2024, his estimated net worth exceeded $8 million, earned from his television contracts and his work as a professional photographer for fashion magazines. Filming his scenes for Lisa Frankenstein in the outskirts of New Orleans lasted just seven weeks.
