In 2014, Pete Davidson joined the Studio 8H set at age 20. He was the youngest member of Saturday Night Live, and his style clashed with the show's tradition. He wasn't after perfect impressions. Instead, he preferred to joke about his own mental health struggles in the Weekend Update segment.
Audiences connected with that brutal honesty.
His childhood ended on September 11, 2001. His father died in the Twin Towers while working as a firefighter. This personal trauma appears in nearly all of his scripts, either directly or subtly. He learned to process grief through dark humor that often made the most conservative sectors of American television uncomfortable.
In 2020, he co-wrote The King of Staten Island to process that grief on camera. Judd Apatow trusted him to lead that 35 million dollar production. The film didn't reach theaters on a large scale because of the global health crisis, but it did well in the digital market. There, Davidson showed he could carry a two-hour drama without losing its rhythm.
In 2022, he left weekly television. The pace of New York and the tabloids' relentless coverage of his personal relationships wore down his patience. So he turned to creating original content. In 2023, he released Bupkis and got Joe Pesci to take a lead role after years of acting silence.
The series was a risky personal bet.
And the move paid off creatively. Davidson decided to cancel the second season of his own series in 2024. He argued the story had already been told and that he preferred to move on to other formats. He took part in The Suicide Squad in 2021 and voiced Mirage in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts during 2023.
The industry stopped seeing him as just a sketch comic.
His advertising deals with underwear and men's grooming brands brought in massive income. But his real passion remains the small comedy club circuit. In 2025, his theater tour across the United States sold out in under ten minutes. Filming Riff Raff in 2024 alongside Bill Murray confirmed his standing in the Georgia film industry. The production wrapped its shooting schedule with a final budget of 22 million dollars.
