Reggie Valdez changed his surname because in the 1990s casting directors only called him for Latino roles. He chose Lee. He has no family relation to Bruce Lee, but the name worked in Los Angeles offices to make him look like the Asian actor they were looking for.
He was born in Quezon City and ended up living in Cleveland. It's a huge physical and cultural distance for a kid who spent his afternoons imagining he was dancing on Broadway stages.
And the phone started ringing.
Before television, he worked on the national tour of Miss Saigon. That stage experience gave him an iron discipline that he later applied on California action sets. In 2001, he landed the role of Lance Nguyen in the first installment of The Fast and the Furious, and that changed his bank account forever.
But mainstream recognition didn't come from burning rubber on the asphalt; it came from his talent for being unsettling on the small screen.
In 2006, he joined the cast of Prison Break as FBI agent Bill Kim. He was a cold, calculating character who worked for The Company. Audiences loved to hate him, because lee brought a touch of bureaucratic cruelty that made the leads nervous.
There was no turning back.
After that villain phase, she moved to Portland to shoot one of the longest series of her career. Between 2011 and 2017, she played Sergeant Drew Wu in Grimm. She appeared in 120 episodes of a show that blended police procedural with the horror of classic fairy tales.
Her character started out as a supporting player, but the writers decided to give her more weight after seeing the chemistry she had with the rest of the cast. Lee has a natural ability to humanize police officers without falling into the clichéd funny cop trope.
In 2022, he joined the cast of The Lincoln Lawyer on Netflix. He plays Angelo Soto, and here he again moves along that gray line where law and morality dangerously intersect. He is an actor who prefers clipped dialogue to big dramatic speeches.
Off camera, he is a man who guards his privacy with professional discipline. Rather than chasing the spotlight at Hollywood parties, he prefers to focus on independent production or on projects that explore Asian identity in the United States.
It was his first six-figure paycheck.
In 2024, he appeared in the horror film Smile 2, drawing on the genre-actor side that has served him so well at the box office. The film earned 23 million dollars in its opening weekend in North American theaters.
Reggie Lee lives in Los Angeles and remains involved with the production company he founded to develop short stories. In 2025, he is scheduled to shoot a courtroom drama whose full cast has not yet been officially announced.
