Scott Menville started working before being old enough to drive. His debut came in 1979 (he was only eight years old), lending his voice to Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo. It was no accident or a whim of a child prodigy.
The son of animator and screenwriter Chuck Menville, young Scott grew up among storyboards and recording booths in California. His natural environment was the entertainment industry and the smell of coffee in dubbing studios.
And he stayed forever.
During the 1980s, his voice was heard in nearly every major animated series. He appeared in The Flintstone Kids and voiced supporting characters in The Smurfs. In 1990, he landed the role of Ma-Ti in Captain Planet and the Planeteers, a project that aimed to raise environmental awareness.
In 2003, Cartoon Network premiered Teen Titans. Menville took on the role of Robin and gave the Titans' leader unusual emotional depth for the time. The tone was serious but with touches of action comedy that hooked millions of viewers.
But the real challenge came ten years later. In 2013, Teen Titans Go! premiered, and his register shifted toward pure absurdity. Many actors would have turned down parodying their own earlier work so radically.
No one expected a parody to last this long.
Menville accepted the challenge and shaped his voice into a neurotic, obsessive Robin that broke the mold of the genre. The series surpassed 400 episodes in 2023 after becoming a global audience phenomenon that still generates millions in revenue.
Outside the dubbing studio, he also looked for his place in front of the camera. During the 1990s, he played Duane in the comedy Full House. His recurring catchphrase (a simple "Whatever") became a recurring joke on American television of those years.
Music was his other outlet for a long time. In 1993 he founded the alternative rock band Boy Hits Car, where he played bass and sang backing vocals. The band toured internationally and recorded several studio albums before acting took over his entire schedule.
The industry never stops.
His ability to modulate his voice let him move into video games with ease. In 2016, he appeared in Final Fantasy XV, voicing a young Noctis. He also voiced various characters in the Kingdom Hearts III saga during 2019.
In 2023, he appeared in the feature film The Super Mario Bros. Movie, voicing General Koopa. It was one of the highest-grossing productions of that period and confirmed his place among the major players in commercial animated film.
An exclusivity contract with certain dubbing studios has limited his live-action appearances for more than a decade due to scheduling constraints.
