Broken Bones and Shoulder-Mounted Cameras

Sam Hargrave strapped himself to the hood of a car to shoot a high-speed chase. It wasn't a fit of recklessness or a bet between crew members. It was 2019, and that man, who until then had lived in the shadow of the stars, was looking for a way to make viewers feel the asphalt in their faces.

His story doesn't start in an air-conditioned director's chair. It starts by taking hits. For more than a decade, he worked as a stunt performer and stunt double coordinator on major productions. But his name began to gain real traction when he became the shadow of Chris Evans in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Hargrave didn't just take the hardest falls himself. He had a technical eye that caught the attention of the Russo brothers. So he went from being a simple stuntman to designing the fight choreography that defined Marvel's style for five years.

It was her trial by fire.

In 2020, he was tapped to direct Extraction for Netflix. The premise was simple, and the script wasn't aiming for literary awards, but Hargrave brought something digital action cinema had lost along the way. He decided the camera should be a character in its own right, someone who suffers and gets dirty among the rubble of Bangladesh.

The Tyranny of the One-Take Shot

Filming that first installment was a testing ground for his obsession with physical realism. And the bet paid off. The film amassed 99 million views in its first four weeks, becoming one of the platform's biggest hits.

But Hargrave didn't want to simply repeat the formula. In 2023 he released Extraction 2 and decided the bar had to be raised. While the first film wowed audiences with a ten-minute faux oner, the sequel pushed the stakes up to 21 minutes of uninterrupted action with no visible cuts.

Hargrave didn't want stunt doubles.

He made Chris Hemsworth shoot a scene on a moving train while a helicopter flew just a few feet above their heads. For this director, CGI is a supporting tool and never the foundation of the spectacle. He prefers real risk and authentic sweat over the green screen of the Burbank studios.

That mindset comes from his years in the second unit. Before directing, he read scripts thinking about the physics of impacts. Now he reads them thinking about how to drop the audience into the eye of the storm without editing breaking the rhythm of the fight.

Many directors hand off dangerous scenes to outside crews. But Hargrave usually grabs the camera himself and runs after the actors. As a result, the final product has a nervous energy reminiscent of 1980s action cinema, yet with the optical technology of this century.

The industry embraced the paradigm shift.

In 2024, pre-production began on new projects that move away from the world of mercenaries. One of them is Prophets, a comic book adaptation where the supernatural element will blend with his close-quarters fighting style. He also signed a deal to direct a film based on the Matchbox brand, where vehicle design will be the central axis of the plot.

His working method has stayed the same since he started. In 2023 he confirmed that Extraction 3 was already in early development following the success of the second film. The budget for the 2023 sequel surpassed 70 million dollars in direct production costs alone.
