Bill Skarsgård is not just Stellan's fourth son who decided to live in the spotlight. He grew up in a house in Stockholm where theater and film were the only possible language. But in Sweden, the family name is a poisoned inheritance that demands immediate results to avoid being labeled a mere heir.
In 2010, he starred in Simple Simon and made it clear that his interest was not in the conventional leading man. He played a young man with Asperger's syndrome, and the European industry took note of his talent for physical comedy. That film was Sweden's Oscar submission and opened the doors of Los Angeles agencies to him.
The family name wasn't enough.
He made his move to the US without much fanfare. In 2013, he took the role of Roman Godfrey in the Netflix series Hemlock Grove. It was a strategic move, since it let him work in English for three seasons before facing the major Hollywood studios. There, he learned to handle the pressure of productions with seven-figure budgets.
In 2017, he landed the casting call that changed his career for good. Directors were looking for someone who could carry on the legacy of Tim Curry in the new version of It. Bill met with Andy Muschietti with a smile that needed no prosthetics or makeup to be unsettling.
He used his real-life strabismus to make the Pennywise clown look in two directions at once during the horror scenes. This physical technique saved New Line Cinema's production thousands of dollars in visual effects. The first part's premiere surpassed 700 million dollars in worldwide box office in 2017.
And the plan worked.
But the danger of being typecast as a nightmare creature was real. So he looked for projects where his face was at the center of the dramatic conflict. In 2020, he appeared in The Devil All the Time, sharing the screen with Tom Holland and Robert Pattinson. On that shoot, he proved his physical presence could be just as unsettling without needing red wigs.
In 2023, he joined the most profitable action franchise of the decade with John Wick: Chapter 4. He played the Marquis de Gramont and gave the villain a European elegance that contrasted with the franchise's cold, hard violence. The film earned over 440 million dollars at the box office and cemented his name in big-budget mainstream cinema.
The makeup hid a carefully laid plan.
In 2024, he took on the challenge of starring in the remake of Nosferatu under the direction of Robert Eggers. For this role, he spent months working with a vocal coach to lower his vocal range by a full octave. The director demanded a physical transformation that required him to spend six hours a day in the makeup chair before filming began.
In 2024, he also released the new version of The Crow, directed by Rupert Sanders. The production faced constant comparisons with the original film from 1994, but Bill focused on a rawer, less gothic performance. The shoot in Prague lasted ten weeks and required intensive hand-to-hand combat training.
The underwater scenes were shot at the Pramer studios in a water tank with thermal control and high-speed cameras. Post-production on the film stretched over twelve months to fine-tune the visual tone of the action sequences set in industrial environments.
